Welcome to the Hockey Show.My name is Roy Bellamy.David Dwork of the Hockey News is to my left right there. We got Sarah Sivian from the Civ Report and Too Many Men to join us here as a guest in a little bit.I love it.Love it.Yeah.
So let's get started with some slap shots here. And we got some hot takes for you.Dave, why don't you go ahead?I'm going first.
All right.Well, my hot take is, uh, I'm calling next year's rookie of the year.I'm doing it now.Uh, I am going to go ahead and say that Ivan Demidov, who is right now playing for, uh, SKA in the KHL, uh, he was drafted by Montreal.
Here's a goal he scored the other night, cutting through the defense, splitting the defense, like putting on the jets, making a nice little backhand forehand move on the goaltender. He gets the puck.Watch how he cuts through both guys.
It was like a knife. And then one hand on the stick, backhand, forehand, slides it by the goal.He actually, in the same game, almost did the exact same thing twice. It was ridiculous. The puck just went through the crease.
But Ivan Demidov went fifth overall to the Montreal Canadiens at the draft last summer in Vegas. He's going to go pro, or he is pro, he's gonna go North American pro after this season. And I think he's gonna be next year's Calder Trophy winner.
Counterpoint? That was terrible defense. How about that?It wasn't great. No, it was not.It was not great defense.Yeah, but he definitely showed off the skills and the skating ability there.
I'm excited, man.Because, you know, playing for SKA, you're going to be getting great competition every night in the KHL.Good team.Yeah.Or excuse me, not SKA, CSTAT.No, SKA.The alma mater of Igor Shostakhin, who is tearing up the NHL right now.
Good talent coming out of that one.My hot take. I'm gonna have to rip the Tampa Bay Lightning here because what happened last year with Stephen Stamkos and their negotiation tactics on trying to extend them was offensive. It was terrible.
They low-balled him.And if I was him as captain of that team, playing for that team for 16 years, winning two Stanley Cups for that team, injuring himself, coming back, and you do that to him,
I can compare it to Dwayne Wade and his contract negotiations with the Heat before he left to go to Chicago. But yeah, you can't do that to your captain.
That struck a chord, too.You bringing that up just now, I hadn't thought about that in a while. That struck a nerve.Yeah, it hurts, doesn't it?That's the same exact thing the Lightning did to Stephen Stamkos.
And they bring him back, as we're seeing here, and parade him around. and it was great for the fans and you've got to do that like you have to but i'd agree with you that on off the surface They're like, yeah, like tap in your chest.
Cause it's not the fans that negotiated with him. It's the team. But this is important though, because as Stammer said this week, it was the fans that he had such a strong connection with.
So for him to kind of have this goodbye and to have that extended standing ovation and for him to kind of go around the ice like that, like I thought that was an important thing for him, but I'm sure, I'm not sure, but I would think.
If it was me, at least, I'd be a little bit like, man, I shouldn't be wearing this.I should be wearing that.
Doesn't look good in yellow?
It's not that, but I mean, you know, he's wearing the same colors forever.
Yeah.Yeah.I mean, it's some resolve for him, at least towards the fans, but Even with the fitting tribute that they had in the video that The Lightning did for him, that does not absolve them from their role in that negotiation battle that they had.
Yeah, you got to treat your franchise guy a little better. It's nice that The Heat and Wade got their happy ending. And their random looking statue, you know, it's whatever.
But hopefully, five, six, seven years down the line, we're talking about something similar that the Lightning made it right with Stamkos, because right now it just does not feel right.
It's going to come down to him signing a one-day contract, and that's it.
And that's how we just fix everything nowadays with one day contracts Yeah, that's what they did with Emmett Smith the Cowboys did when he left to go to Arizona He came back signed that one one day deal and retired as a cowboy That's what's gonna end up happening one of the somebody just do a one-day contract like one of the Stahl brothers.
Maybe I Don't remember if one of the Stahl brothers did What Eric Stahl yeah, maybe he did what Carolina Let's see.
I mean, jeez.Yes, yes.Thank you, Google.Eric Stahl signed a one-day contract to retire his members. So that's the thing that we do now.Yeah, that's how we fix everything. That's how we fix, yeah, so cool.I wonder how much those contracts are worth.
$0 negotiating on my one-day contract.
Well, you want you want to get taxed? Is that how you want it?Because that's what's gonna end up.You know what?
If I have to demand a thousand bucks so they can tax it and I take home 600, you know, I'm cool with that and this is Florida by the way, uh, my one-day contracts gonna be with somebody in Florida. So I'm not really getting taxed.
So you're gonna pay by the hour on that?I'm always gonna get paid by the hour. No, I work in this I work in broadcasting.
Oh, of course. Let's go to the wins here.I'm gonna start with this one.I'm gonna go with the city of Los Angeles They won big-time this week. All right, so crypto calm arena during the the Kings game versus the Golden Knights
During the intermission, well, I guess throughout the game in this situation, but especially during the intermission, showed the World Series.
It was game five at Yankee Stadium, and they showed the Dodgers winning the championship, and the fans got to see it in the arena. They even played the actual World Series game during play. That was really cool of them to do that.
So that's a big win for me for the Kings.
I have some thoughts.I have some thoughts on this.First of all, it's cool that the Kings did that.Cool on the Kings to play it.I'm sorry, if I'm a diehard Marlins fan, and the Marlins are playing in the World Series with a deciding game.
There's a road game, by the way. There's a road game for the World Series.I'm leaving my Panthers, I'm giving somebody my Panthers, sorry Panthers or whoever, Heat, whoever.
If the team is playing and the chance to win the championship that night, I'm not going to another game and staring at my phone all night or hoping they put out like, what the hell are you guys thinking? They're wearing their Dodgers gear.
At the hockey game, your team's winning the World Series. What's going on?You should make this your fail. When I was 12, and the Panthers were in the Eastern Conference Final, my family went to the Marlins game during game seven.
And I got forced to go, because I couldn't stay home.So I wore my Panthers jersey, and I brought my Walkman and listened to whoever was the play-by-play in 96.Chris, was it Chris?Jigs McDonald. No, I can't think of his last name.
Chris Stone or, ugh, God, forgive me, Panthers, for not remembering. So that has resonated with me all these years, because they actually put it on the Teal Tower.
In the bottom corner, they had Panthers-Penguins score there, and you could hear little murmurs throughout the crowd whenever the Panthers scored. But I wanted to be home.I don't know why anybody would go to a game
when your team is about to win a championship. If they're on the road, go to a bar.Go hang out with your friends. All right, all right, all right.I'm done.
I'm done.Yeah, you're done.So that, I mean, you might as well replace your fail with that because that's money spent by those fans, by the way.
They didn't know when, I mean, especially for the season ticket holders, they didn't know what day or what time that game was gonna end up.There's a secondary market.
for tickets. It's easy.Honestly, if I can't get rid of them, whatever.Take the L for the cost of the tickets. If you're a seasoned ticket holder, they're cheaper anyway.I'm not missing my favorite team.
I want to be in a situation where I can celebrate and have fun. It just doesn't work for me, and I just feel like I'm repeating myself at this point, but no.Okay.What's your win, Dave?My win of the week?
I thought we were doing... Oh, no, we're doing wins.
My win of the week is out of the Pacific Northwest. Our old friend Brendan Montour
The first hat trick by a defenseman this season, a natural hat trick, and we've seen two other goals, power play goals from the point, as we've seen Brandon Montour do many times here in South Florida.
Just a cool thing to see him get that for Seattle and then A day later, leaves the team to go head home to be with his wife while Seattle was in Eastern Canada. He heads home because his wife had their second child, a little girl, earlier this week.
So little Kai's got a little sister now.So awesome, awesome win for Brendan Montour and his family this week.Just super happy for him and for the Montour clan.
Good for him.All right, good for him.Good dude, right?Very deserving.Yeah, it's good that when you have a child during the season, usually good luck follows you as a hockey player. The dad bump.Yeah.The dad bump. The old dad bump.
But we saw it with Montour in his first stint here.We saw it with Sergei Bobrovsky.Ryan Lomberg had a dad bump.
When Sergei Bobrovsky became a father, that's when everything changed.Everything changed.I'm not saying we.They.
on the big show were busy complaining about how sergei brodsky was playing and then comes a father and now all of a sudden boom center cup champion dad bump is real man yeah biggest fail of the week we're gonna go to a fight that happened during the uh capitals rangers game matt rimpy who by the way was demoted earlier to the harford wolf pack
a couple days earlier, was promoted back up to play against the Capitals because those two teams hate each other.Legitimately hate each other.I mean... Those are two big, big men.Yeah.Yeah.Rempe's 6'8".I remember last year... 6'5".
When I got introduced to Matt Rempe was when he fought Ryan Reeves. And I always thought Ryan Reeves was like the biggest M-believer in the league. He always just seemed like so much bigger than everybody.
And then I saw him next to Rempe and I'm like, oh my God, this is a mountain of a man.So that was awesome. Now, I don't know if you saw this.I'm gonna interrupt our fails for a second.
There's a picture that I put in there, guys, if you could pop it up real quick, of Matt Rempe.
So him getting called back up to the Rangers was cool, because then he got to go back to where he stays with the Rangers, and that's in Jonathan Quick's house. He's Jonathan Quick's house guest. And that is Halloween.
That's Rempe on the right, and that's Jonathan Quick's son on the left, dressed up as Matt Rempe.
uh... that that's pretty awesome i think his son's name is cash cash and uh... but how quickly at the fighting stands up there uh... obviously route uh... ramp is having a very positive impact on that family uh... you know most hockey players are good dude so that's not surprising there but i thought that was pretty cool so i just wanted to share that well hopefully cash fights better than rampy because i think i have been doing well at all he lost that fight came away bloody in the three games he's played so far
he's had one fight six hits zero points he's even on the plus minus um in that game versus the capitals he had five uh minutes on the ice uh and uh Yeah, he spent as much time in the box as he did on the ice in that game versus the Capitals.
He might be demoted again.
Sounds about right, in terms of how he divides up his time.
Yeah.Let's go with your fail.
My fail is, I feel for, it's another goalie thing. As I said on Twitter, this is why I keep my ass in the goal crease most of the time, because things like this happen.Oh, no.
Ilyas Emsonov came out to play the puck and kind of whiffed, half whiffed, whoops, and then an awesome spin move by Warren Fogle. Hudiolas are missing, by the way.Yeah, they are.But look at this.I got it.I got it.Oh, wait, I don't got it.
And then so smart by Fogel to just quickly put it in right between his legs. That's a major fail.Sorry, Ilya Samsonov.Just, dude can't catch a break.
Yeah, don't play the puck when you have the opposing player resting on you.Two hands on the stick, at least.Yeah. All right, go ahead, Dave, and send us the break, please.
All right, well, coming up next, we're going to talk to our friend Sarah Sivian, who just launched the Civ Report, and I can't wait to talk to her about a few things that are going on in the lead right now.
All right, joining us now is Sarah Sivian from The Siv Report and Too Many Men.That's cool.
You're introducing her with her show named after her. That feels like it's a pretty cool thing.
Yeah, I don't have a show named after me.
That's true. She picked the title. That's smart, though. This could have been like the Belle and Dwarf show or something.
yeah that's true instead of hockey show it's like you know an author writing a book and that author's face is plastered in on the cover of the book yeah yeah no but i like this it's not just it's not just the hockey show it's the hockey show yeah that's true it is the hockey d but is it the civ report because
It's the Civ report.Oh yeah.
Emphasis.Emphasis.It rolls off the tongue very nicely.
The Seattle Kraken have a assistant coach, a history-making assistant coach, and Jessica Campbell and Ryan Clark of ESPN wrote about her.And one of the things that they discussed was what she was going to wear in her NHL debut. She chose white.
because that's the only color a man can't wear. Now, it's after Labor Day, that's one thing, right? You can't wear white after Labor Day.That's a rule, isn't it?You're asking the wrong person.
I think that's over.I think if you're Jess Campbell, you pull it off.Oh, really?It's a statement, yeah.You're doing what you're not allowed to do.You're breaking the fashion.She's a rebel.
Well, look at what she's doing. She's standing on the bench of an NHL team coaching. She's already breaking through barriers, so through the fashion rule, We're polka dots, wear whatever you want, man.Yeah, more stripes.
I love that she's not trying to blend in, though.Like I love as the first woman behind the bench, she really is making the statement and saying, Hey, I'm here.I'm not gonna dole my shine for anybody.
That's true. That's good. And after a month, I mean, seems like a good situation for her.How would you judge what's going on right now in Seattle?
Oh, I'd say there needs to be more than one player scoring one goal every single game.I feel like, remember that game where they were just lighting it up?It's like every player has one goal.
That's a Ron Francis classic to just have, like, the amount of depth, but the depth is doing nothing. You need a star.I'm sorry.
Well, they got Brandon Montour putting up hat tricks.
They generate so much offense from their defense.Montour fit in perfectly, but at what cost?
Fair enough, fair enough. So let's talk about the big story in the lead right now, which I think is the Connor McDavid injury, because Edmonton already kind of stumbled out of the gate a little bit.I had them coming out of the West this year.
I thought we might see another Stanley Cup final rematch, just as how good both teams looked heading back into the season. But the Oilers, not so much, Sarah. What are your thoughts on the way the Oilers have started the season?
I mean, Zach Hyman went zilch for the first 10 games, and it's like, it really does accentuate how good McDavid is, that he's off to his career-worst start regardless of the injury, and the whole team flounders.
I think the goaltending has been atrocious, obviously. The defense is non-existent, and it's just, I wake up every single day wanting Darnell Nurse to be the best defenseman on Earth. I want him to live up to his contract, and he just doesn't.
We're already talking about which right-hand defenseman can go to his side and help him out.You can't have your best paid defense almost in the league needing help like that year after year.
The defense is never going to be good, but everybody has to be playing their career years on offense for that to happen and for them to be the best team in the league. And that's not happening whatsoever anywhere in the lineup.
So if you're struggling on offense, you're not going to be successful for the Oilers.
He did get an assist and was a plus two last night. And Leon Drysdale did have two goals and an assist. But are we looking at a bust status for Darnell Nurse?
I mean, we have been and it stinks because I mean, he'd be fine if he was a second pairing on a really good team, but he's expected to do so much. And that contract, it's not even just about the money, it's about the trade clauses.
It's like the most ironclad contract. That agent is like the best agent in the world.I don't know, like signing that was crazy in retrospect, but I'm happy for him.I think the pressure to perform, it's like his, it handcuffs the rest of the team.
So staying north of the border, something else I wanted to talk to you about, and I think you guys touched on this on your podcast recently, is the goaltending situation in Toronto. We're big Anthony Stolarz fans down here.We love Stoli.
And it's great to see that he's kind of taking that job and running with it a little bit in Toronto, because they have such a good team.
But is this going to be good enough for them to get to where they want to go in terms of they want to be a playoff team, they want to win playoff rounds? We love Stoli. Are they going to show that kind of faith in him and let him run with it?
Or are they still kind of waiting for Joseph Wall to see if he's the guy?
I mean, they keep putting Lowe in when they think he's ready and he was good against Seattle yesterday, but aren't we all saying Seattle isn't that hard to beat?So I think the story is still unwritten there.
I think Stolars, I love seeing him go off and he really, he has that in him though and then it kind of regresses to the mean.So I think they say if you have three good goalies, you have no good goalies, but I think the situation is different here.
I think it's cool that everybody gets to chip in and have like, their moment to shine and we're going to see who wins out.The question is, is Berube going to handle that correctly? Is he going to know when enough's enough?
The Boston Bruins are currently four, six, and one with nine points dead last in the Atlantic division. They lost eight to two
in carolina last night it was god-awful and uh... the size of the beast up in the off-season the gain some some pounds to be more physical but it seems like the big bad rooms are just big and bad world jim
I mean, I can talk shit about the Brewers, but you're giving them the Crosby treatment.Goodness.
Watching them makes me so angry.Like, I hate that they're on the TV at every bar I go to in Boston. They take, like, one shot per period. It's miserable hockey.Because it's about Jeremy Swayman. If he's good that night, they have a chance.
If he's bad that night, absolutely no chance. And that's just been exposed.I mean, they had two elite goaltenders for two years, and They were playing this way, though.I know Florida fans and Florida Panthers followers know this.
Like, they were miserable to watch. They don't have great offense until it's overtime and Pasternak makes it happen.I mean, watching them with no depth throughout the lineup is a miserable experience.
And having Olmark go away just kind of accentuates that.
It's not all his fault, though.I mean, the team is bad, but he has an 884 save percentage, and he's given up almost four goals a game at this point.Like, is this because he missed training camp?
No, it's because the Bruins' offense is awful, and they spend so much time in the defensive zone, and Swayman genuinely can't do it all, but he's not doing as well as he did with Omar, because he didn't get
Like, he is worth the money, but he didn't get the proper reps in to totally be that number one goaltender.Like, we didn't get to see as much of him as we should before that contract signed.
So now it's kind of like the amount of pressure on him, the drama, it does add to it, but it's also just, it's tough watching the offense be in their zone for one second of every game.
Is Jim Montgomery on the hot seat?
Yes, he is.Yeah, that's something has to give.It looks like they're not playing for him.Like the amount, I cannot stress enough, four shots in nine minutes, like when you need to come back.
It was just horrendous yesterday, but that's a micro-ism of what the season has been.
Sarah, before I get to my next question, I just want to compliment you as a fashionista yourself.I love the 1996 NBA All-Star Game sweater that you're donning.
I've also got some mid-90s swag myself with my Arturus Herbe shirt here, so I feel like we kind of have the same vibe today, but I love it.It's a great choice by you.
I get AOC Richmond stuff on right now from Ted Lasso. Can't go wrong.
You're always wearing something funky. But I, this is vintage. My boyfriend is from San Antonio and they hosted the All-Star Game and now Wemby's putting on a five by five show.So I had to rep San Antonio.
Here's the better looking.
No, it's very cool.I like that look.
Thank you.I like it too.I wear it like every day.
It looks comfortable.Yeah.
Back to hockey.Alex Ovechkin. I love what he's doing this year, obviously.I mean, he's got, what, three goals in his last two games? He scored again last night. What are the numbers here as I pull them up?Okay, so he is now 36 behind Ratzke.
So he's doing it this year, right?Like, OV's gonna get better as the year goes on.It's gonna just kind of go downhill, and we're gonna see some history, right? It's OV's year. You got him scoring 40.
First of all, it might be the Capitals at large here.Like I love, maybe this is a spin zone, but I love that he started out the season with assists, not goals. And now he's like, don't worry guys, I'm here like two goal periods.
He's back, he's so back. But Tom Wilson pulped out.Everybody's helping out.Connor McMichael's girlfriend's giving birth and he's like, wait, I gotta score two goals.Everybody is firing on all cylinders for the damn Washington Capitals.
Like who thought that would happen? But Obie's gonna do it, yes.
what they did in the off-season, right?Like bringing in Chikrin, they got a new goaltender, like they made some smart moves, and I guess maybe we got under the radar, because now all of a sudden, look at the Caps.
Yeah, that's what happens when you capitalize off the evil that is the Vegas Golden Knights. You capitalize.
The evil empire. That's smart.Stephen Stamkos is now a Nashville Predator. He had the nice comeback video and a nice tribute in Tampa when the Predators played the Lightning. Now,
Am I right in saying that, yes, it was a nice tribute, but it was disingenuous by the franchise in Tampa, considering how they low-bought them in negotiation last year?
It's awkward as heck.I guess that's how you keep the franchise going.I mean, the Lightning looked better than ever.I gotta hand it to them for doing what they did, as hard as it was, honestly.
Like, I'm kind of Team Lightning on this one, as much as I love Stamkos.I love what he brought to that team when they weren't good, and I love
I mean, that shift where he came back after a broken leg and scores, that's one of my favorite hockey shifts of all time.
But that being said, if you want to keep succeeding, if you think your team has something, which with that first line, of course it does, you go get Jake Ensel.I'm team lightning on that one.I'm sorry.Wow.
So keeping it with the lightning before we wrap things up here, obviously they're off to a pretty good start.
Nikita Kucherov is looking like he's having another Hart Trophy caliber season, but just kind of looking at the top of the standing, or the scoring standings, you've got Kucherov, Kyle Conner, and Sam Reinhart, all teams that are doing well.
The only players in the league who are in the top ten in both goals and in points. Is the Atlantic Division just the cream of the NHL right now, Sarah?
It's either the worst or the best thing we've ever seen in our lives, or the most mid thing we've ever seen in our lives, because there are so many bubble teams right now.The parity is insane. And we're waiting for the Red Wings to mess up, right?
But I do think the Atlanta division, it's giving the best competition night for night, pound for pound.I mean, I want to give credit to Sam Reinhardt. He, when Barkov was out, Kachuk was out, he's still scoring the goals.
He's shoving it in everyone's face. That contract looks amazing.I love that.
Finally, Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist in his NHL debut on October 10th, and then he took a bump in that game and has been out since. He skated in practice yesterday, but the Sharks are the worst team in the league.
Is Mike Greer, and I guess his brother Chris Greer and the Dolphins, are they? Is he on the hot seat?Yeah, they're both hot seating right now.
Well, yeah, I think, no, I don't think Rear's on the hot seat.I mean, they're supposed to be bad. They're supposed to be tanking.I think it's such a delicate line to walk on when it's like, you don't want to lose night after night.
But at the same time, I love that Mario Ferraro called game. He's like, we're going to win tonight. And then they won.And it was like the most exciting thing in the world. They had two fun games, right? We'll let them live after that.
OK.All right, sir.Always great having you on the show.We appreciate you, sir.Serbian the report and too many men.Thank you for joining us, sir.
Thanks so much for having me.Always a pleasure, guys.
All right, we're back.Let's go over what the Panthers did this week. They did some winning. They did some winning. They swept the entire state of New York. They beat the Rangers, the Islanders, and the Sabres this week.Three game winning streak.
And let's go over what happened in the Garden. They won 3-1 versus the Rangers. That was Sergei Bobrovsky's 400th win.Stole it.Great game by Bob.Great game by Bob.He was the fastest that any goaltender has reached 400 wins with 707.
He beat Hendrik Lundqvist.Actually, he beat the king in the Garden. So that's pretty good.
That's pretty ironic. No, it's pretty cool. And I mean, look, where is he at now?Bob is 401 wins.So he's still got a ways to go before he catches the great Martin Brodeur at 691.Yeah, but at 36 years old, right?Well, that's the thing.
He's 36 and he's still like playing just as well as he did, you know, five, six, seven years.I mean, you know, the year thing that the Panthers and everything, but he's still playing very strong.
It doesn't look like he's had any physical fall off to his game. The age is not catching up with him.We know that Bob is this guy who's got a legendary work ethic.First guy in, last guy out.He loves it.He's a gym rat.
No reason to think that he's going to slow down.I wouldn't think he's the guy that would, you know, just as his contract's up after next season, I wouldn't think that he's going to just call it a career. He's going to want to keep playing.
And if he can still playing at this level, I'm curious, how far can Bob take it?
If he plays on a team like the one he's on right now, that plays defensive style, that takes away second opportunities, that cuts away on the inside of the ice, he can go for a long time and have a lot of success.
So depending on what he's looking for out of his next contract, if he's willing to make it work with the Panthers and they're willing to play this style, could see Bob playing another few years for the Panthers and succeeding.
Eastern Conference Championship rematch in this one.Go over how the Panthers did and how the Rangers struggled.
Well, the Panthers, it was a good competition of a game because both teams got their chances, both goaltenders played really well.
It was nice to see the Panthers get their offense going a little bit on Shusterkin just because he's been such a tough guy to score on.Anton Lindell and Sam Bennett both
with some nice plays to get that pucks behind him in that game but overall uh... that was a all bob that was a circuit of rossi's stolen game very appropriate for his four hundredth win uh... because the rangers put a lot of high danger chances i believe it was nine i think the number was no i believe that number was ten and he stopped nine of them uh... but yet just awesome by bob very deserving and uh... congrats to you bob four hundred wins
The Panthers then went a couple boroughs over to play the Islanders. They won 6-3.They came back from a 3-0 deficit and a very, very rocky start for Spencer Knight, who allowed three goals in the first seven shots before
saying, you know what, shut this thing down.
That's what you like, though, like as we've talked about with Spencer Knight, it's going to be a process this season. So to see him have that kind of a rough start, not get pulled, be able to come mentally like, all right, I'm good.I got that.
Like, you know, it's a long game.Obviously, he's on a team that he knows that is capable of coming back as they did.
And so to see him shut the door on the Islanders the rest of the game to see Florida, as we've kind of seen, this is such a mentally strong team going down early is not going to hurt them.
They turned it on, came back, and really, it felt like the tale of two games, because the way they looked in the first not even 10 minutes, and the way they looked the last 50, much better.
I said that Spencer Knight, before he went into player assistance, that all he has to do is just give up one goal, and he'll be set. He'll be in the game and shut everything down.So hopefully, he can get back in that mode. All right, I'll allow one.
Look, he's a great, talented goaltender.I think it's just a matter of getting back into his routines and his rhythms and feeling comfortable at this level.I think we're seeing that he looks very, very much in his element right now.
He's going to get one of these games probably in Finland. So be nice to see that kind of continuing to see him get one out there as well. But overall, I think, you know, small sample size, we're only 11 games into the season.
He's only played three of them. But from what we've seen so far from Spencer Knight, I think it's what you want to see early on.
Matthew Kachuk scored his first and second goals of the season, including this one that cut the deficit to 3-2.This goal is criti-central.Matthew Kachuk.I mean, he drove everybody crazy on this goal. Now take a look at this.He got speared, basically.
They didn't call that. And then he cross-checks the goaltender, and then... The shot on goal, hit the post, he found the puck behind him, and jammed it home, and then the big scrum. And then he punches it.I love it.Yeah, that's critical central.
Well, he scores. That's his goal, right?
And instead of putting his arms in the air, he's like, no, I'm going. It's like rock him, sock him.I love it.
Yeah, we'll do the celebrating when we escape past the bench.
Look, and from the goaltending perspective, he's pissing off a lot of goalies.
He's good at that, and I got respect for that, because look, yeah, we don't like to get, we're in our area, we got our thing going on, and if you're a mentally strong goaltender, you can kind of deal with that and move on, but obviously that one, because Tkachuk bumped into Varlamov, Varlamov responded by chopping him in the midsection.
Tkachuk smartly put his weight down, took his stick and took it behind the net. It's a good move by Tkachuk, you're not gonna get called for that.
And then he comes back gives him a little pop in the shoulder like you're in his head Like the puck hits the post the rebounds there goalie doesn't know where it is That was as you said quintessential perfect Matthew Kachuk.
That is what makes him so valuable is that he's so skilled But he can still do that greasy grimy dirty shit that that drives everybody crazy Yeah, he is the guy who you love to have on your team and you hate to play against.
Mackie Samaskiewicz scored his
first goal in his NHL career. That felt like it was just like a matter of when, because he was getting a lot of chances, his speed was showing off, he tried that wraparound move at least three or four times before finally converting on it.
I feel like he's done a good job in terms of just fitting in with the Panthers this year.
He hasn't looked out of place, which is what we've seen with some of the rookies that they brought up over the years, whether it was a Hendrick Bordstrom or whether it was a Grigori Denisenko, they just didn't look like they were ready at the NHL level.
They They kind of faded in, they never stood out.But with Mackie Semestevic, he is standing out, he's making things happen with and without the puck. So, very promising rookie season and a good start for Mackie so far.
The Panthers traveled up to upstate New York to play the Buffalo Sabres. They won 5-2 and this will make Rose happy because Alexander Bogdanov made his return from injury and scored the first goal of the season for him.Yes.
That's, look at the smile on her face.
Yeah, well Barkie looked great, like on the very first shift of the game, like he made a between the legs move, he drove at the net, it was like, hey, I'm back, I'm ready.
And it was a little scare at the end of the first period where it looked like, you know, he took a little tumble behind the net.I think he got bumped into by Nico Mikola and skated a little gingerly, but he was obviously fine, came back.
Yeah, I got worried about that one.
A little bit. But no, look, Barkie is Barkie.I mean, when he's healthy, when he's in the lineup and he's 100 percent, he is a game changer in every zone and every level, whether it's special teams, five on five.
The Panthers are rolling right now, and I'm very excited to see what they're going to do because they're going to play a very, very good Dallas Stars team for a pair of games in Finland. That'll be a great test for both of them.
It's a five game road winning streak for the Panthers.Carter Verhage has a seven game point streak.Sam Bennett, has a five game goal scoring streak.Everything is going very well for it, especially the top six forwards for the Panthers.
What is it about guys in their contract year with the Panthers just scoring the lights out?Like Sam Bennett, eight goals through 11 games.Who saw that coming? He's had five straight games with a goal for Sam Bennett.
And he did that with Matthew Kachuk missing five games, with Sasha Barkov out. So it's been an awesome start to the season for a lot of guys. And you mentioned Virheji on the point streak. He didn't score for like the first seven or eight games.
And he still kept the scoring up.Now he's putting the puck in the net.So I don't know, it's a good time to be a Panther fan.I feel like we say that a lot.A lot of pets being adopted because of Sam Bennett.
We'll get into that a little later this month.
Quick plug though for Rose to chime in real quick.Don't forget to follow the Hockey Show on X on Instagram.Hockey Show DLS. Right, Rose?Very, very good.
You know, you have a microphone, Rose. And what the hell are you wearing? What is this getup that you got over here? What's going on here?
I'm so sorry.I forgot I had this, but it's for my migraines.I'm so sorry.
That's an ice pack. It's like Frozone. There's an ice pack on your head, but you're wearing a blanket.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.No, but, yeah.
No, but yeah.I'm going to get it off for the rest of the thing. The Panthers are 7-3-1 right now.15 points to lead the Atlantic Division as opposed to Boston Bruins, who are dead last. They are second in the Eastern Conference behind New Jersey.
Third overall in the league behind Winnipeg and New Jersey. They are 6-1-1 since starting the season, 0-2-0.That's some good stuff right there for your defending champion. Not too bad. Annenberg will join us next week.
He's a month into his new gig with Prime Canada, and he wants to talk about it.
I'm excited to hear his take. What's the last month been like?He was so jacked up to get into it, so I can't wait to hear how it's been going for him.
He's always jacked up. That man is a good man. He's a fun man to be around. So good for him. He'll be on next week. That's the hockey show for this week. For Dave, for Rose, for everybody in the back.I think it's Gino and Jason right now, right?I think.
I believe. If they have microphones, they would say yes.But yeah, they're back there.Hey, thumbs up.
Yeah, I know. There's Danny as well.Hey, all right. That's our engineer. All right, folks. We are out of here.We will see you next week.Goodbye.
