Hello and welcome to today's episode.
I'm your host, Joy Pereira, and I'm so pleased to be bringing you the very best ideas and interviews in this podcast, Nerds of Joy, to broker and grow your digital strategy, amplify your business, and broadcast yourself with less fear, to create real life opportunities for greater success, and intentionally design the life that you deserve.
It's long overdue, right? So sit back, listen curiously, and enjoy the show. Today's episode is a free form riff.I'm wondering how you're going on your entrepreneurial journey and you don't have to make the leap in its entirety.
For those of you that have stuck with me since season one. or perhaps you've joined me for the very first time today, I wanna say thank you to you all.How did you find me?How are you finding Nerds of Joy?
The caliber of the guests, the content and quality of information, the formatting of the episodes, my ability to engage you as a listener. the production values and the quality of recording? How much raw and organic can you handle?
Or do you prefer overproduced and formulaic podcasts?Do you listen to podcasts recommended by your family and friends?Does a YouTube video catch your eye and you find yourself becoming loyal disciples to a personality or actor, maybe a host?
Do you like to find podcasts that have been created off-label or via indies? Sometimes, as is the case here, the quality and intention is at its highest level at the start.
You might be happy enough to consume a podcast derived from a popular radio program where they've taken a split and zhuzhed it up.Maybe you follow people because you're still into cool. and think they are worth a listen.
Maybe they've got a massive following on social media. Some big questions for you.Are you a consumer of podcasts or are you a podcast creator?Would you like to be?Is there anything at this moment that you'd like to say?
Are you able to voice it out to an audience?Do you have a platform or are you a writer? Do you write things up on your socials?Do you record things and send them out?Do you send voice notes to your friends?
Are you one of those people that walks into a room or maybe the pub and you speak and people listen?Or are you one of those people that corner people and they try and get away, Pepe Le Pew style?Do you think your opinion matters?
Who wants to hear from you anyway? Are there people? There must be, right? I think podcasting is really great for introverts because it gives them the opportunity to think and to form.
They can pre-script something or they can riff off the top of their head. They're thinking, always thinking introverts. They're basically a living catalogue of information, ideas and concepts.
That, I think, can be channeled into a podcast where you're able to go express yourself. It's a wonderful thing. And podcast retains the attention of the listeners, unlike any other digital offering.Think about that.
Does a two second reel give you authority?Or does sitting in the hot seat, speaking on a microphone from the top of your head work? And podcasting is extremely portable. That is what I love about it.You can take it.
It can be listened to anywhere on your device. Most people cannot last a minute without having or knowing where their phone is.And that is the craft of having a podcast. So how do you get into people's ears?Is it through sponsorships?
Is it through paying for ads on social media? Is it by word of mouth? How do you get into people's ears? Are you able and savvy to be able to make the call to let them know about what you're doing?
Or do you feel that you need to create a digital avatar to hide behind it so you can express yourself? Do you have a pen name?Recently, I finished Only Murders in the Building, and I adore Oliver Putnam.
Because of the creativity and the performance and the theatricality of his character, I can relate.I love how they struggled as new podcasters. They were talking about reach and their marketing and mystery and intrigue, how they put that together.
So it was really fun for me to watch that and have podcasting embedded in the overall story. But if we're not Martin Short, Steve Martin or Selena Gomez, how do we actually get traction out in the world? How do we have our voices heard?
And I think that's the hardest thing. There is this unconscious bias where a male's voice might be seen as more of an authority than a woman's. this be the case. And so how do we push back on that, ladies?
How do we work towards that where we can be seen?Because I know I don't fit into the box of boss in heels, or women who whine, or lifestyle influencer. But I also know that my audience is coming from a different place.
And I've always tried for it to be quite generic in that I'd like to include as many people as possible from all walks of life. I think that we can resonate with people.People do not have to necessarily be in our target age range.
And I think it's really important to be able to get out there and listen to what other generations have to say.I'm not a boomer.I'm Gen X. But I'm really happy to listen to millennials and also Gen Z, which are my children.
So there's merit in listening to the oldies. There's also merit in listening to other people, younger people.
And it's actually been really great for me to review some footage from me in my 20s and just how I processed information, what I'd written, and also review some of the diary entries.Very, very interesting.
I thought I ruled the world and I knew everything. And the more that I dig into the past, the more I think I really didn't.
But that's all okay, that's all a process of learning and doing things and that's why I think it's really fantastic to be able to produce your podcast in this time and in this moment because you will listen back and it actually becomes a time capsule of your way of thinking right now.
It is like the old diaries, when you look back
and you cringe about it, or you think, wow, I was onto something there, or you think, gosh, I could have really changed or solved that problem in a heartbeat with what I know now, but I was clueless back then, as were all my friends.
It's really a wonderful thing, and that's what podcasting can do to you.I think we tend to listen to podcasts, we tend to listen to podcasters, and think that they have all the answers and they often don't.
And also that's a symptom of people being able to talk unbridled without having training or without having ethical practice or without having the nuance on holding a conversation and what constitutes overstepping. Now people can build things in
the way that they specifically want to, they can build things to their liking, to their taste. But I think that's why we have so much disruption in the world today that's been generated on social media.
A lot of bros with a microphone are being dethroned for their radical and sexist thoughts. Some of them speak a virtuous game and have been exposed as being the ultimate players behind the scene.
There's the conspiracy, the rage bait, and speaking in absolutes to get a lot of traction.Listeners are hoodwinked rather than presented information to form their own opinions.Consider who you follow and just bear that in mind.
My premise has always been to bring you the very best entrepreneurs, creatives, and leaders, people at the top of their field, people that have something to say, and perhaps maybe haven't had the exposure previously.
So my role is to produce them and to make them feel comfortable within their skin to be able to create the very best information, aka content, that comes to the listener. To make them feel comfortable within their skin, that they have something
worthy, something that needs to be listened to, something that they can share with an audience in a walls down approach with no fuss to create rich conversations and authentic connection. I hope you found that on Nerds of Joy.
Please dig back into the back catalogue if you'd like to see more or listen to more. You're going to find out a lot about creativity and process.
A lot of people who have huge degrees, very high degrees, that are also showing the really human aspects of what it is to be who they are.I think there's a lot of value in that, a lot of wisdom, as well as a lot of vulnerability.
It's a wonderful thing. So I want to thank you so much for being here.
