I'm ready for the football.I've been waiting a long time for this moment.
Time is now! This is the Countdown to Kickoff on ESPN Radio.
The time is here, the time is now, and it's Countdown to Kickoff on ESPN Radio, presented by Progressive Insurance. You can give us a shout on the Dr. Pepper calling line, that's 888-SAY-ESPN.
It is Matt and Myron here getting you ready for week eight of the NFL season.Pretty good slate of games today.A lot of chance for some big divisional rivalries, and it's nice to have Myron back from his star turn on the sidelines.
channeling his inner Aaron Andrews.Matt, thank you, or Myron, thank you very much for being here and deciding to grace us with your presence.
Inner Aaron Andrews, no, I'm not on that level. But it was fun to do some NFL games, man, and just be on the field again, man.I'm just seeing the NFL from a different perspective, and it's kind of enlightening, man. It's actually pretty cool.
What's the new perspective?
Help me understand what it is.
Can I tell you the most impressive thing I've seen in the NFL, and I'm 100% being honest about this?NFL punters, right?Okay, so I've watched punters on TV.You see the ball go up, whatever.
To see it field level, man, and to see the way those guys can hit a particular spot on the field, the rotation on the ball, it is amazing to watch what punters can do.
So you mean to tell me you're on the sidelines.
with like Patrick Mahomes and all the Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen and then you see receivers like you were in Minnesota you got Justin Jefferson and you watch all that and you're like look at that dude punt it was amazing I didn't know I didn't know the ball rotated like that like I didn't understand that like Pete you know when you kick it
It's almost like a spiral in the air.And then they can slow it down. You know punters. It's just fascinating to me.I didn't realize how good they were and how accurate they were.
So that's actually been kind of cool. You don't get that from all the other shows. that's the thing they're most interested in is the guy.
You just don't like punters, man. That's on you.No, I like punters. If you don't like punters, then that's up to you, man.
I feel like punters are having a moment. One of the biggest shows is a punter show. It's what makes you happy.I'm glad. It's amazing.I wouldn't have thought that would be the most impressive thing.

Oh, look at that.Okay, that's beautiful.
Nick, I feel like I'm telling my grandmother how to watch the ESPN Plus game.
Listen, I don't do what everybody does, man.I don't do, like, you know, I told you with TikTok, I only see TikTok on Twitter.Like, I don't know, you know.
If it's not on Twitter, I don't see it.Alex Cooper, Joe Rogan, watch out. Here come Matt and Myron, hopefully getting Kamala Harris and Donald Trump this week.
Well, no, no, no, that's not, that's not.But I'm glad we have it, man. It's a big, it's a big milestone for people that don't know, right?
To the two presidential candidates, you're invited next week.I promise this will be a great home for you before the election.
and I'll be in my house off the show but uh you can do what you want.
Uh college football last night uh kind of a not not a huge upset night probably the biggest win was Texas A&M getting a win at home over LSU.They are now 5-0 in conference play.First time since joining the SEC.First time in any conference since 1998.
They are on a collision path with the playoff at this point.Texas A&M Only undefeated team in the SEC in conference.Their only loss was, of course, in the very first game of the year against Notre Dame.
And you look at their schedule, they go to South Carolina. That's not a gimme. They go to Auburn.Eh, not a gimme, but probably. And then they play Texas. As long as they win two of those three,
They will now own the tiebreaker against LSU, and so as long as they win 2-0-3, they're going to play in their first SEC Conference Championship game in the first year of Mike Elko's reign as coach. Are you impressed with the Aggies?
Yeah, I mean, I'm impressed by Mike Elko.I mean, I think right now, I know there was some Dion buzz by folks earlier, but he's your national coach of the year. And I don't know if it's close, considering what he's been able to do so far.
Guy that ain't know what Indiana is?
You know what? You know what?I shouldn't say that. You're right. That there may be a race there. But I mean, I think just Mike Elko in the way that like he has kind of changed the perspective. It's one thing to win.
It's another thing for people to view your entire program differently. And I think that's what he's done already. It's something that Jimbo couldn't do.
And if they keep winning, man, you know, they got a chance to really not even get into the playoff, but have a shot at the national championship if they play like this.So they were blessed.
They were blessed with a pretty good as far as SEC draws can get.Yeah, they're playing. They've been best blessed with a pretty good one.I mean, they ended up playing a Florida team that was down an Arkansas team that's not good.
A Missouri team that's kind of taking a step back Mississippi State. So they've been blessed. So last night was kind of their big test. They win it, and now they're moving on.
Alabama hangs on to their shot at the playoff by beating Missouri 34 to nothing. No weirder team than Alabama. The way they can just beat Georgia, beat Missouri, and then lose at Vandy. They've just been a really strange team.
Do you think they're going to find a way to sneak into the playoff?
I think so.I mean, it's interesting, man.I saw a stat where Kalen DeBoer at Washington went, like, 5-2 in his first seven games or something like that. And then he won, like, his next 27, right?
So, I mean, we forget that it takes a while for a coach to establish his culture. You're coaching the SEC.There's nothing like that.
I think certainly Alabama has a chance because I think Jalen Milrow, despite some of the challenges, at his peak, man, that is a high-level quarterback.
And you see the thing that Alabama still has, and this was obviously true with Nick Saban, they just got better athletes than 99% of the team out there.
So it's gonna allow them to win games that maybe they shouldn't win or at least be in the mix with games because of that advantage they have.So I think they'll be a playoff team.
And then finally, last night, the World Series, Dodgers win one to two. They lead two games to nothing against the Yankees. The team that leads 2-0 wins 82% of the series. The big story was Shohei Ohtani. He got hurt stealing in the seventh inning.
It turns out he has shoulder subluxation. What does that mean?Yeah, Nick, if you're gonna write that on my screen, tell me what a subluxation is.

What does that have to do with medicine?
You think lawyers just pop over to med school? There's some crossover there.
Alright, okay, hold on, hold on.It's when a bone is partially pulled or pushed out of place.
So it's kind of like, so it's the fancy way of saying he popped his shoulder out of place. Is that right, Rachel?
Yes, as Google and Nick said, he popped his shoulder out of place.
How do you pronounce it?Sublocation?Sublocation? What is it?How do you say it?
Google didn't teach me that part.
Subluxation. It's like, what is it when they used to say you had a bruise and now they say you have a what? What's the fancy word for bruise?Contusion. a contusion.
Used to be when I was a kid you'd go I got bruises on my knees and now you say you have contusions on your knees.Popping your shoulder is now a subluxation.Hopefully he gets to play because obviously for the Dodgers, but also for baseball.
With Aaron Judge hitting under 200, I think Shohei, you know, they had the highest rated game won in like 10 years. So this is, as we said, Myron, a good for baseball series.
Yeah, I mean, LA and New York is gonna drive those ratings, right?I mean, they're gonna be incredible, still a lot of star power.I hope Otani can play at the same time.
If there's any risk, especially for a guy who's been injured and overcome major injuries, they're not gonna put him out there and risk other things, but I hope he gets back.
Yeah, I hope he gets back as well, but exciting series.Game one with the Freddie Freeman.Great, man.A walk-off Grand Slam.I love the video, Myron, of Steve Kerr on the sidelines for the Warriors being told that there was a walk-off Grand Slam.
That shows that even for all these professional guys, there are certain things that can happen that still turn them into children.
Yeah, man, with that guy, I don't know who that guy was, but it's almost like he had a dude planted behind the bench whose job it was to let him know what was happening at the game. And then his reaction was really pure, man.
I'll tell you a quick story about reaction during the game. One year, Kentucky was playing Texas A&M in basketball and Kentucky was up by like 20 and Zion Williamson chose Duke during the game.
And one of his assistant coaches for Cal came up to Cal during the game and whispered, Zion pick Duke, because I think Kentucky thought he was going to pick Kentucky.
And Cal picked up his little whiteboard where you draw the plays and threw it on the ground in the middle of the game. And if you didn't know that's what he was saying, you'd be like, why are you so mad, Cal?We're up 20.
That is why he was mad, because Zion was going to Duke.
Surprised he ain't tossing it to the crowd, man. That was a big moment.
That's a little behind the scenes. You ought to look it up.Kentucky, Texas A&M one year.Be a part of Countdown to Kickoff Nation on the Dr. Pepper calling line.Call 888-SAY-ESPN.That's 888-729-3776.ESPN Nation's presented by Dr. Pepper.
It is not college football season without the delicious taste of an ice cold Dr. Pepper.College football, it's a Pepper thing.Coming up next, Tua is back on the field. Is that good or bad?The Jets are playing angry and Aaron Rodgers is angry.
Is that good or bad? That's next on ESPN Radio and the ESPN app.
Matt and Myron the podcast.
Chelsea and Newcastle are playing in England. And Chelsea as I speak scores a goal. You would have thought I had that teed up before but no Chelsea with the goal to go up one nil against Newcastle.Myron I know you've heard of Chelsea.
Have you heard of Newcastle as a team?
I thought that, don't they make beverages? They do actually.
They make, Newcastle makes beer and then they also have a soccer team.Their uniform, like black and white stripes, black and white vertical stripes.
Is that because I saw an event on?Is that a classical?Is that what it's called?The new?No, it's El Clasico.
It's not classical.El Clasico. And it's Real Madrid and Barcelona. You should know that Newcastle, which is in Britain, El Clasico by its very nature, you should probably guess. And it's El Clasico, Real Madrid, Barcelona is this afternoon.Yes.
There's a lot of countries.That's all I'm saying.
There are a lot of countries. They are also in some ways different.Nick, have you subscribed yet to the Sunday mornings of Matt Myron podcast?
Why not?We need to get the word out.If I can't get my producer to subscribe, can we just do it, Nick, this segment? Can we go ahead and subscribe?
All right, I'll work on it.But I also am responsible for posting the podcast, and I've been told not to get high on your own supply, so.Trying to keep it professional.
Rachel, what about you?Have you subscribed yet?
I don't know if this applies.
I have not, but I'd like to tell you you have a five-star rating on Spotify.
Look at that.Five stars already. That's what I'm talking about. When you say a five-star rating, does that mean one person gave us five stars, or do we have five stars combined?
It does have a one next to it in parentheses, so you have one five-star review. All right, so that's another thing.
I know on Sunday mornings, we see the metric. We have a lot of listeners out there. You all tune in regularly. Now go subscribe.Give us a rating, a thing like say, hey, this show's amazing. We want to build it up.
After seven years, we have the ESPN approval to have a podcast. That's a high standard, Myron. Not too many people have podcasts nowadays. We get to have one.
We better have a five star.We better have a five star.
All right, the AFC East, we thought coming into the year, might be the strongest division. It really hasn't.Aaron Rodgers has been disappointing.Tua has obviously had the injury after yet another concussion.
But today, the Dolphins play the Cardinals and the Jets play the Patriots, another team from the AFC East that struggled.Between Aaron Rodgers and Tua,
Which of the guys, Aaron Rodgers says going into this week, he feels like things have turned for the positive. So who are you more excited to see take the field today?A new, more positive Aaron Rodgers or two after sitting out for five games?
I don't know if excited is the right word about either guy, right?I mean, Aaron Rodgers, I think it's proven that you don't want him to be a GM, right?Because bad things tend to happen.
And I think you've seen the jets that have been hurt by some of the decisions that Aaron Rodgers has ultimately made. We'll see if he gets on the same page with Devontae Adams. They weren't on the same page in their first game together in New York.
But I think with to a man that's like, what are we doing?Like I don't even know how to talk about to going into a game where I think for the third time in just over a year, we were having conversations about his future in the NFL.
And I think with his latest concussion, it felt like a lot of people were saying, yeah, it's time for him to sit out and maybe rethink his future. And now here he is. Fine, you can't control that, Matt, right? But he won't even wear the guardian cap.
And the guardian cap is that cap they've been wearing in training camp, and it's supposed to help you avoid concussions. And two is like personal choice.I'm not wearing a guardian cap.If two is not wearing one, then who is?Do you think?
Do you think the NFL, so this is a question that I think a lot, this is a hard thing for people to talk about when it comes to Tua.It is.Because it makes us all feel uncomfortable.
I mean, if we're honest, like watching Tua right now, he's gone from one of the players that maybe brings you the most joy in watching to the one that you're like, I don't know what I think about it.
Do you think the NFL should play a role when it comes into concussions in telling guys they cannot play, like not just during the game, but weeks, months, maybe career later?Or do you think ultimately you have to do what the guy decides?
I mean, I'm not a, it's dangerous, right? It's dangerous to give Any, uh, organization, that kind of authority to determine when a player can or can't move forward.Right.I mean, there is a concussion protocol in place. He passed all the tests.
We all know that.Right.So he went through the process, but like there, there, it should be something beyond the process. It feels like, well, what would it be?
Because a lot of the, a lot of the things that ultimately show up, you're not going to see for 25 years or 20 years. So how do you, how would you even make a process?
I mean, that's the thing, though. And I think that's Tua's attitude. It's like, right now, I'm good. And I think he's just decided that whatever happens in the future, happens in the future. And I don't know that you can stop anyone in that situation.
Only the dolphins could say, you can't play. And here's the thing, man.If he had shattered his leg, right, or something like that, it'd be a different conversation.
Like, if this had been like a multiple, a big injury that everyone could see, we'd go, yeah, that's it.He probably can't come back.
but because concussions and the effects of them don't show up for years later sometimes, it's hard to stop a guy who feels good right now.
If your name was Myron Tunga Viola, if you're Myron Tunga Viola and he comes to you and he goes, hey big bro, because there's a huge age gap between you, You're like four times a second.
Okay, get to the question though. You're as much, much, much older, brother.Yeah, don't say that.I'm not as old as you think, man.
And he comes to you and says, what do I do, big bro? What would you tell him?
I mean, from an outside perspective, I'm like, hey man, it's time. It's time for you to sit out.
at the same time so you would tell him not to play anymore as like his big brother for real you would say i don't think you should i would honestly say that at the same time the reality is this is a guy worth 200 million dollars because i'm sure a lot of people are depending on well he's worth 200 million dollars if he finishes out his contract if he retires he would not get that money
No, but there's an injury guarantee, though. So if he can't play, I mean, that's the interesting thing.
Wait a minute, hang on a second. Is this true?He gets his full money, all of it?
Yeah, he gets the bulk of that money if there's an injury. But again, he's passed all the protocols, so that's not in play right now. What's clear is that Tua has decided that he's going to play football until he can't play football.
And you know this, Matt. Those people are impossible to change. You just can't do a whole lot about that, unfortunately.
Well. I don't know.I wish him success. It's going to be hard. When he takes it to a hard hit, we're all going to have the same reaction.
And it's going to make it, I think it makes it very difficult to enjoy his skills, which are otherwise, at times, really amazing to see, because you just sit there thinking, man, I hope something doesn't happen to him.
I hope something doesn't happen to him.And that's the way it is.And that's your big brother advice by Myron Metcalf, if you ever need advice.
I ain't that much older than him, though.
You call Uncle Myron there, and he'll make it happen.Coming up next, Jerry Jones is making more noise. But what does that actually mean for the Cowboys?More Jerry blabbing here on ESPN Radio.
Hey, it's your resident Super Bowl champ, Chris Kennedy.Coming up Monday, Russell Wilson is back, and Daniel Jones continues to struggle. But which player is actually closer to being benched?
It's on Sportsman, like 6 AM Eastern, right here on ESPN Radio, ESPN2, and ESPNU.

The Cowboys searching for a bounce back win in San Francisco against the Niners.
This is a very good team. It's Sunday night football, so we're really looking forward to going to get this fourth win.More than anything, we just want to win.
So we got the right core group of guys, young guys coming in that are willing to do what it takes and listen.
The San Francisco 49ers are a far cry from the defense that has kept this team in the hunt to win NFC championships. But the Dallas Cowboys are a far cry from what they've been the last few years as well.
You were probably sitting there thinking, like, when are they going to talk about the Cowboys?Well, the answer is now.Cowboys and 49ers, Sunday night football.
But before we get to that, here on Sunday mornings with Matt Myron, presented by Progressive Insurance, we have a new podcast, aptly called Sunday mornings with Matt Myron. And some of you are already subscribing. You can do it on Spotify.
You can do it on Apple. You could do it on your on the platforms where you get your podcast. We'd love for you to go ahead and subscribe. And if you do, send me a message either on Twitter at KY Sports Radio or the text machine.
You know, we get text during the show.772-774-5254.Tracy sent in and said, this is aggressive imaging for your show.I like it.You should have Lionel Richie in the corner. I would have vetoed that. This is a much better one.
Shad, not only subscribed, he gave it a five-star review.Thank you.And then Kyle notes, I don't understand. It says that you all are the creators of the show, but it says your rating is explicit. Is there an X-rated version of the show I missed?
Well, they're leaving it open for our special episodes where Myron talks about love.So that's why it's explicit, just in case we decide to go off the rails occasionally. Why is it explicit? That doesn't make sense.I don't know.
Why is it explicit, Nick? Why are we rated as explicit?
it should it shouldn't be I hit clean every time I upload it.So yeah I mean say it's explicit.
OK.Well it says it was like naughty by nature or something.
Yeah that's not you know this is a kid friendly show man.It is not call Myron dad. That's not the name of the show.
Whoa whoa.Sunday morning.
Don't get my water man.How am I getting you in hot water.I don't do anything. Cowboys at 49ers tonight on Sunday Night Football.Chris Collinsworth is getting his oohs and ahs ready all day for the play of Brock Purdy versus Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys have been outscored total on the year by 42 points. That's the second worst point differential through six games by a team that's 500 or better in the last 10 years. They've had eight turnovers in the last two games.
That's their most in a two-game span since 2012. And yet, they're not stopping what they're doing.
As a matter of fact, Myron, for $40 a pop, fans can experience what the employee manning the tour information booth has described as, quote, a day in the life of a Cowboys player.
You basically get to act like you're a Cowboys player for a day, and it's only $40.I guess that would involve turning the ball over a lot and listening to Jerry Jones babble. But do you still believe at all in this Dallas Cowboys group?
That'd be a frustrating tour, man. That would not seem fun.No, I don't believe in these Cowboys. They're bad at everything.I mean, the defense isn't good. The offense is putting up like 21 points a game.
I mean, Jerry Jones has to fire himself like that's the only way forward.
He's the one who made all these moves and listen, you go back to the start of the year in training camp when he's saying, Oh, it's not a priority to sign CD lamb not worried about Dak Prescott to resolve this preseason drama.
And then you get into the year, and it feels like that spilled into the season, man.But just Jerry can't be trusted to make these personnel moves.Although he's the owner of the team, he's never going to stop.
I just think they don't have enough to be competitive. And you look at the NFC and how it's changing, they might be a team that's an afterthought for years to come if they don't make some serious moves in the years ahead.
You know, the tour being $40 to be a player, That, to me, seems like absurdly cheap for that. And some players, there's been some rumors that they find all these people living their lives acting like they're a Dallas player to be distracting.
Jerry Jones, on one of his 95 weekly interviews, had this to say about that.
Not in the very least, and I'm not trying to be cute here. When that writer was interviewing me to write that article, I really told her, I said, I'm so happy you're writing this article. because it will increase our tours significantly.
More people will come to the tour. And so please write the article.I want you to really go into it in depth. That's actually foolish to think that some kind of tours would impact the players. Now, I like what Michael Parson says.
I like what Jack Prescott says.I like what Ferguson says. Now, those guys, we all recognize them and realize they're competitors. and they laugh at the idea that some kind of tour or something going on would impact their play.
So, first of all, everything about that's great.I was glad they wrote the article. Why?So more people would sign up for the tours. That's why I would like it.
Do you think it could distract the team to have randoms walking around acting like they're Cowboys players? Does Jerry Jones think AT&T is Disneyland?
You do get Mickey Mouse ears when you show up.
Like does he think people are like, man, let's all take a trip to Texas kids. We're going to go on the Dallas Cowboys stadium tour.
Hang on a second.I actually think 40 for $40, Byron. That's that's not, I would do a tour for $40.You get, I mean like $40 is a very small amount of money to get to be a Cowboys player.
Yeah, well, it depends on where you are in this economy, but I would say... Oh, listen to you acting like Jerry Jones.Listen to him.I'm a man of the people. That's all.
I'm a man of the people. My man literally is like the million dollar man.He uses dollar bills to wipe his forehead and he's sitting here acting like he can't do $40.
Here's the thing, though. How bad is your organization where you have to promote tours of your stadium over the team itself?Like, that seems like things are pretty bad if you're focused on that element of things.I just think Jerry Jones is lost.
And he hasn't been for a long time in terms of, like, how to make this team into a contender again. They're gonna fire Mike McCarthy. That's gonna happen. They'll replace him with somebody else that Jerry Jones has handpicked.
But they have personnel issues. And you gotta pay Micah Parsons at some point. Are they good enough to compete? It just doesn't feel like it.
Like, I think we'll look back, Matt, and go, the team that won 36 games in three years, which they did in the three previous seasons to this, that was Dallas' window to go and try to make a run.
I don't think they're getting back with Dak Prescott if Jerry Jones continues to be the GM.
I don't think that's right either.I will say today's game against the 49ers tonight kinda reminds me of like, NWA in 1987, Barry Wyndham versus Harley race, loser leaves town match. The loser is, is, is out of town.
I think if you lose this match, if you're the Cowboys or the 49ers, you're like Barry Wyndham. And that means you're going to the WWE because I think you're not going to make the playoffs, but the Cowboys are three and three $40 or three and four.
And the NFC, you know, just the NFC North alone has all four teams with a winning record. Washington's 5-2, Philly's 4-2, Atlanta and Tampa Bay have a winning record, Seattle has a winning record.
I think if you lose tonight, Myron, that team, whichever one it is, the Cowboys or the 49ers, is on a path to not making the playoffs at all.
Yeah, I think both of these teams are in a lot of trouble, but for different reasons, like the Cowboys, they're just not good.
Obviously, injuries has been a factor, but they're just not playing well enough on either side of the ball to be competitive. The Niners, like, everybody's hurt.Have you seen their injury list?
Like, at this point, you got to try to figure out who's actually available for the 49ers, man.Like, they are a mess on both sides of the ball as well.
But let me read you their schedule coming up.
I mean, not only are they three and four, if they lose tonight, let's say they go three and five, then these are their next five games at Tampa Bay winning record team Seahawks winning record, Packers winning record, Bills winning record, Bears winning record.
That's their next five games.Like you are set up to miss the playoffs if you lose today, Myron.
Yeah, no, it's going to be bad news for the losers.Loser of this game, but even the winner.I don't think there are any guarantees, like considering what the NFC is at this point.
You got teams like the Rams coming out of nowhere and looking like they're picking up momentum again. You mentioned the NFC North. Are the Eagles starting to figure it out a little bit?
So it's just going to be a crowded landscape if you're trying to make a playoff push. But back to your NWA example.
Let me read the NGA report before you do that. Christian McCaffrey, Achilles.Brandon Ayuk, ACL.Debo Samuel had pneumonia and was in the hospital.George Kittle, foot sprain.Juwan Jennings, hip.Chris Conley, ankle.
That's a pretty tough group to have to come back from.
Yeah, that's Brock Purdy carrying the entire load for that team, and that's not easy to do.But can you translate your 1987 wrestling metaphor to WWE wrestling today, so that people under the age of 58 can understand what you were talking about?
First of all, I would think many of our listeners know who Barry Windham is, and they definitely should know who the King Harley Race was, one of the true legends of the sport.
Wait a minute, you don't know who Barry Wendell from the Harley race is?
Matt, translate it to today.
Give us the WWE- I mean fine, I guess it would be like Seth Rollins vs. AJ Styles, loser leaves town.Is that better?
That makes sense.I know those people. No, that's better.
I expect our young people- I know Barry Wendell. I expect our kids to know things like Barry Windham or Harley Race.We are losing our histories on the world's greatest sport here as we get older.

So these are very nice.Shad says, probably the reason The podcast is called Explicit. It's for all the times Zymyron cusses out people that claim to be from Milwaukee. No, I wasn't cussing them out.
I was just, you know, it's a Milwaukee thing. It's just, it has to happen. It's not a Milwaukee thing.
You're the only person I've ever seen mad when people are from your town. When people call me from Kentucky, I'm pretty happy to have a Kentuckian on here.
Somebody calls from Milwaukee, you tell them to show their ID at the door or else you're going to punch them in the face.
Well, I don't know if you follow Milwaukee over the last month or so.There's a lot of emotion there. You know what I mean? You just got to kind of stand your ground a little bit.And that's all I'm doing. It's a Milwaukee thing.
But it's all in love, though.Thank you.

Now the Ravens play the Browns today.Deshaun Watson, of course, got hurt last week, so this will be, have we heard, is this Jameis today or is this the other kid?Jameis. It's Jameis.
Jameis.Yeah, man. What would you make of a real quick, uh, people laughing at the Deshaun Watson and then just the aftermath of that.Did you care?
I mean, look, there's two different issues here. There's the issue about his behavior in the years prior, which is obviously extremely negative and deserve.I mean, I, I didn't think he necessarily should be, uh, back in the league.
Then there's the, in my opinion, separate question about whether you cheer an injury. And my general view is you don't cheer when people get hurt.I understand there are people who believe, well, this is a bad dude, so I'm fine with it.
I just don't think you do it.In my opinion, this is the way I look at it.If the Browns fans are honest, They were cheering not because of his behavior a few years ago. They just don't think he's good.
If he was really good, I don't think they're cheering his injury. So I think it's poor form because I don't think you were cheering his behavior.I think you were cheering the fact that he hasn't been good this year.
So to me, that was kind of poor form. That's the way I look at it.
Yeah, yeah, cheering injury is tough.I mean in any situation like it's hard to get behind that. But to me, it is a separate conversation about his character, which is all valid.
I thought the postgame reaction from like Miles Garrett and Jameis Winston, I can't stand when players use a bunch of big words and people go, wow, look how passionate he was.And they actually don't say anything. Because James Winston is supportive.
Deshaun Watson didn't say anything.Like, I just don't like the whole Southern Baptist preacher tone that those guys take on in those moments. You know what I mean?
But would you agree with me?At the end of the day, for me, this is the bottom line.If he was playing well, would they have cheered that injury? No, no.
They're cheering him because he's not playing well.
It had nothing to do with his character. And so if you want to boo his character, I'm fine with that.I get it.But they were booing or cheering the injury because he hasn't been good. And I think the players know that.To me, that's what drove it.
Because again, these Browns fans, not all of them, but many of them were taking up for the decision to sign him.Their problem is that he wasn't playing well, and they wanted to see somebody else play.
Yeah, he was the worst quarterback in the league. But the locker room situation was guys talking about his character. That was the issue. It was James Winston and Miles Garrett saying, oh, he's a guy of high character. He's gone through so much.No.
The women involved in these cases have gone through so much.So that part, to me, was what turned a lot of people off.
I didn't see those. That's a different thing. All right, so the Ravens have five straight wins after starting 0-2.I will remind you, Myron, when they started 0-2, I said I still think the Ravens are one of the best teams.I still hung on.
I have owned more Lamar stock. You know, Lamar is now like NVIDIA, but I owned Lamar when he was at the very bottom of the stock, and I am now becoming a rich man.I've got, like, Myron Metcalf money on Lamar stock.
And so I'm not surprised this has happened because I've believed in Lamar for a while. But he is even hitting new levels for himself. He tied his career high with five pass touchdowns in week seven against the Bucs.
That offense looked like a machine against Tampa Bay Monday night. And Derrick Henry, who people thought was washed up, now has eight straight games scoring a touchdown. The Ravens offense looks like an absolute juggernaut.Do you expect it to continue?
Every time I see Derek Henry, I'm reminded that somebody had to tackle him in high school. And I don't know, if you want to get a thrill, go to YouTube and look up Derek Henry's high school highlights.
And it's literally like little kids trying to tackle a giant. And he's still doing that in the NFL.And remind you to remember Dallas could have had him.Thought he was too much.Thought he was too expensive.Didn't want him.
And Baltimore said, we'll take him.And now to me, they're playing the best football.
Why do we, why do we always bring up?He could have had been in Dallas.Baltimore is a better situation.Like he's got a, he had a better chance of winning in Baltimore than he did in Dallas.
I think it is perfectly reasonable for him to have ended up in Baltimore.
true but i think the idea was that dallas didn't think it was enough of a priority to make a real run at him which was a mistake right which dallas obviously that's what they do they make mistakes but baltimore looks incredible man lamar looks like he's gonna win another mvp he is his you know he can throw the ball in ways that he could a couple years ago remember there's a lot of short past game the last couple years he's airing it out uh... guys like rashaad bateman are getting involved uh... the defense is is improving and i just think they're right now
They're the best team in the NFL.I think they're playing the best football in the NFL.
So you get Kansas City, Baltimore.Kansas City now also has the tiebreaker. So there's a very good chance that game will be in Kansas City. It's the AFC championship game. Can't Baltimore at Kansas City.If they played it tomorrow, who are you picking?
Baltimore.I'm thinking Baltimore.Yeah.
Yeah after all like people still are not picking Patrick You still are gonna look at that man that just wins and wins and wins and say you're not gonna win again
But we got to be honest, and I was just in Kansas City, man.You know, and those people really love, you know, their organization. And, you know, I was there when they signed DeAndre Hopkins, and that was big news locally.
They're not winning because of Patrick Mahomes the way that they have in past years. But they're winning.
But see, that makes it, look, can I make the case that makes him even more compelling to me?Because I know he's going to play well before the season's over.I know he is.
So if they're winning without him playing well, imagine what they're going to do when he plays well, because he will.
Eight interceptions, six touchdowns. That's just the reality, right? So we gotta be able to have an honest conversation about this not being Mahomes' best year.Beyond that, last year wasn't his best year. But you don't think he'll play better?
I think in the playoffs, it's hard to bet against him because we know what his ceiling is.But this does feel unusual. Now, part of it is he's had a lot of receivers who've gotten hurt, which is why you go pick up DeAndre Hopkins.
But we also have to be honest that like he's not the efficient Mahomes we've seen from past years.
So you're also riding off.
The Goat? You're riding off Sir Patrick Mahomes?Nah, I'm not, let me finish this.I'm also a big NFL history guy.He has, no team has won three Super Bowls in a row.Now we gotta think about what that means.
You go back to the 70s and those Steelers and how great they were. The 49ers in the 80s, the Cowboys in the 90s.Tom Brady, they never did it.So for me, it's not even just a dude who's maybe having a down year, it's also him having a down year
with injuries on his team and history against him. That's hard to beat, man.
Nick, I perfectly think it's reasonable to pick the Ravens for the Super Bowl, but I want you to write down, Myron Metcalf on October the 27th wrote off Patrick Mahomes.
I didn't write it down.Don't say that. It's in the podcast.
It's in the podcast, that's right. It's exactly how you can subscribe to Sunday Morning to Matt Myron. And you can listen to this is in the podcast. You have said you're writing off Patrick.
No, is this a down year for him or not?Is this a down year from what we've seen so far?Is this a down year from home?
I'm going to say they're winning. And ultimately, that's the point until they lose.I'm not calling it a down year when they haven't.
Great answer, politician. It's not a great way to not know.
It's not a down year.My name is not J.D.Jones.It's Matt Jones. And it is Sunday morning with Matt Martin coming up.Coach Herm Edwards joins us right here on ESPN Radio.
Hey, it's your resident Super Bowl champ Chris Kennedy coming up Monday.Russell Wilson is back, and Daniel Jones continues to struggle, but which player is actually closer to being benched? It's on Sportsman, like 6 a.m.
Eastern, right here on ESPN Radio, ESPN2, and ESPNU.
Thanks for listening to Matt and Myron, the podcast. You can listen to the show live every Sunday morning at 10 a.m.Eastern on ESPN Radio, the ESPN app, and on SiriusXM Channel 80. Matt and Myron, the podcast.
