Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's tip is that eating takes time. Not a lot of time, but a non-zero amount of time.
00:01:03 Speaker_03
So when you are building your schedule for the day, make sure you have some space to eat. If you do, my bet is that you will feel better physically and mentally.
00:01:17 Speaker_03
As I have talked with people about their days, I've realized that so many folks assume that breakfast and lunch don't need to be accounted for in their schedules.
00:01:27 Speaker_03
We understand that showering and getting dressed and putting on makeup, if you do that, takes some amount of time. And in general, we build in time to our morning routines to do these things.
00:01:38 Speaker_03
Understanding that one cannot truly roll out of bed and straight out the door. Eating is as much a necessity as showering, more so really. And yet we assume this can simply be done on the go or multitasked with something else.
00:01:55 Speaker_03
People will eat a protein bar in the car or while walking to the train. They will take the time to go to a Starbucks or Chick-fil-A to grab a breakfast sandwich, but then eat it in transit or at their desks.
00:02:09 Speaker_03
Lunch, likewise, often happens at the desk or, I have heard from folks who work at home, sometimes it is eaten over the sink. So one need not waste the time pulling out a plate and then cleaning the plate afterwards. To which I have to say, come on.
00:02:28 Speaker_03
Two things are true. One is that eating properly, that is, on a plate, sitting down, and at a pace that doesn't give you indigestion, really doesn't take that much more time than eating in a distracted manner.
00:02:43 Speaker_03
And second, you are probably not so busy that you can't take the extra few minutes to enjoy and appreciate your food. You can scramble eggs in a pan in about five minutes and then eat them in another five.
00:02:59 Speaker_03
Cut up some fruit or toast some bread while the eggs are cooking and voila, a real breakfast for less time than it might take you to stop at a fast food place.
00:03:09 Speaker_03
Or if you do decide to stop somewhere for breakfast, actually sit in the restaurant and eat. Or take your breakfast to your office and eat it in the break room while your computer boots up. or eat it on the bench outside your office before you go in.
00:03:26 Speaker_03
You can start your day with a moment of calm and an act that says, I matter. This is a powerful mindset shift and it doesn't take more than a few minutes. Same with lunch. Even if you work from home, you are worth getting a plate dirty.
00:03:45 Speaker_03
You can also sit down or even sit outside.
00:03:48 Speaker_03
For just a few minutes more than it would have taken to scarf something down standing up or eating at your computer while half-working, you can have a true break, even if a short one, that centers you for the rest of the day.
00:04:01 Speaker_03
If you work in an office, unless you have a really good reason, get away from your desk for lunch. Maybe that means meeting up with a friend or a colleague for a nice lunch out.
00:04:11 Speaker_03
Or maybe you take your packed lunch to a park and eat while soaking in the sunshine. Or you can enjoy your lunch in the break room while connecting with colleagues or reading a book.
00:04:21 Speaker_03
If you get takeout, don't eat your sandwich on the walk back to your office. Find somewhere to sit down. This doesn't take zero amount of time, but like anything, you can simply account for it.
00:04:37 Speaker_03
Build your morning routine to account for the few minutes it takes to make and eat breakfast, or at least eat breakfast if you're eating something ready-made. Build your meeting schedule to allow for at least 15 to 20 minutes to eat.
00:04:51 Speaker_03
If most of your meetings take an hour, as in 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, and 11 o'clock, schedule morning ones on the hour and afternoon ones on the half hour, that is 12.30, 1.30, and so on. This means you have at least half an hour built in.
00:05:08 Speaker_03
I know some people consider it a point of pride to eat at their desks or that they don't even have time to eat. Look at how busy I am. I can tell you this is a recipe for being starving and distracted by 2.30 p.m.
00:05:21 Speaker_03
and grabbing something sugary that won't fuel you for the rest of the day. It is pennywise and pound foolish with the minutes. Better to eat a real meal, feel less frazzled, and be more grounded and purposeful. In the meantime, this is Laura.
