You are listening to Episode 157 of the Remind Yourself Podcast. Welcome to the Remind Yourself Podcast, the podcast for physician moms just like you who want to ditch mom guilt, stop yelling, and start enjoying their lives today.

00:00:21 Speaker_00
I'm your host, Rachelle Chestevich, certified life coach, family physician, and mom of four. If you want to overcome overwhelm for once and for all, this is the place for you. Hello, Mama Docs, and welcome back.

00:00:39 Speaker_00
Today, I'm here to address something that I hear time and again from physician women. I have the honor of speaking to so many different women every week, and I hear again that they are exhausted and overwhelmed.

00:00:53 Speaker_00
And many of them think that the problem is them, that they need to somehow become better, that they need to be stronger and figure out the system in order to get everything on their agenda done.

00:01:04 Speaker_00
And what I want to remind all of you is that you are not broken. The system of medicine is broken.

00:01:13 Speaker_00
And the system of medicine is running on the backs of altruistic doctors like you that are taking advantage of us hard-working, compassionate physicians. We are exhausted and we are being asked to do more and more.

00:01:26 Speaker_00
And we certainly don't want patients to suffer. So when we're asked to do more, we just try to look at our calendar and figure out how can I do this.

00:01:34 Speaker_00
And when we feel like it's too much and we're completely overwhelmed, again, many of us go inward and think, what am I doing wrong? And I want to tell you that you are doing nothing wrong. You are being asked to do things that are superhuman, right?

00:01:48 Speaker_00
You're an amazing woman, you're an amazing physician, and yet trying to fix the broken system by working harder isn't working. And in fact, it's a huge contributor to burnout.

00:01:59 Speaker_00
Recent statistics from AMA show that nearly 63% of physicians are showing at least one manifestation of burnout. The World Health Organization defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon from chronic unrelenting stress.

00:02:18 Speaker_00
It is an occupational phenomenon, not a weak person, right? You do not need to be more resilient. So what I'm here to say is just you are not the problem. I'm sure you're aware of that. Most of us would agree that the medical system is broken.

00:02:36 Speaker_00
But the other good thing that I want to remind you is that you do not need to wait for the system of medicine to change in order to start feeling better. You can start having more control in your life.

00:02:49 Speaker_00
You can start having more joy in medicine and fulfillment with your patients. very quickly, but it takes understanding. Oh, my brain has gotten in the habit of thinking of all the bad things.

00:03:03 Speaker_00
In fact, of course, as a physician, my brain is wired to see all the things that could be fixed because I'm a problem solver. So when our brain focuses on that, it doesn't realize that there is another way in order to feel better.

00:03:16 Speaker_00
We just think that the system has to change. But I'm here to remind you that just by subtly switching our perception and thinking about what we really do enjoy about our jobs, you can feel better.

00:03:29 Speaker_00
And I love to share with you that coaching is an evidence-based solution for burnout. I've spoken about it previously on my podcast. I have physician colleagues who have been doing the research, and several JAMA articles have been written.

00:03:44 Speaker_00
And they show that coaching creates a statistically significant reduction in burnout, an increase in self-compassion, an increase in satisfaction in the work. Isn't that what we're all looking for?

00:03:59 Speaker_00
I always used to tell my patients, I wish I had a magic wand to wave it and make everything better for you. So too, my physician colleagues who are struggling, I wish I had a wand. And yet I think that coaching comes as close to that as possible.

00:04:14 Speaker_00
It shows us that hope is available and that there really is more that we can control than we think. Because again, the way we've been trained is very polarized. It's either got to be this way or that way. And it's hard for us to see any wiggle room.

00:04:27 Speaker_00
We either think I have to stay here and suffer or quit my job. And I want to give you the hope that there are so many ways that you can feel better where you currently are.

00:04:37 Speaker_00
Now, again, my caveat is always if it's completely toxic environment, get the heck out of there, right? Reach out, let somebody know, and get out.

00:04:45 Speaker_00
And yet, if it's just the day-to-day, this is too much, I don't feel like this job is sustainable because I'm spending hours and hours in the evenings and on the weekends catching up on my charting.

00:04:55 Speaker_00
I want you to know that hope is available and that you can feel better. And I want to invite you to my next round of group coaching for physician women called StressRx. We begin in early April and the doors are currently open for registration.

00:05:13 Speaker_00
Registration closes March 18th and I don't want you to miss this opportunity because you won't have this opportunity again for several months.

00:05:20 Speaker_00
I want you to come together with other physician women to normalize your struggles and to learn real proven strategies that help you feel better.

00:05:29 Speaker_00
The group coaching program is the difference between waiting to enjoy your life when you retire and actually enjoying it now.

00:05:36 Speaker_00
In our 12 weeks together, you'll learn what it actually takes to get your notes done at work so that you're not spending each night and weekend catching up.

00:05:44 Speaker_00
And you're going to figure out what the hell you want to do with the time that you create when you no longer bring work home with you. Yes, this really happens.

00:05:51 Speaker_00
You're also going to change your relationship with yourself so that you're able to prioritize your needs and take time for yourself without feeling guilty.

00:06:00 Speaker_00
Very importantly, you are going to learn how to set boundaries without feeling like a narcissistic a-hole. This is something that I hear time and again. Women say, I know I need to learn how to set boundaries, but I just feel so guilty.

00:06:12 Speaker_00
I feel so selfish. Have no fear, my friends. I've got you. You are also going to learn how to ditch resentment and frustration in your relationships and you're going to start remembering what you liked about your partner in the first place.

00:06:25 Speaker_00
Overall, I would have to say that you are going to go from feeling like you're just surviving to actually having energy and enjoying your life and gasp, enjoying medicine again.

00:06:37 Speaker_00
Ladies, I've been doing this for several years and I've seen it time and again. Women come into the group and they're thinking, I'm not even sure how much longer I'm going to be in medicine. I may need to make another change.

00:06:47 Speaker_00
And after our time together, They feel so much more in control. They have their evenings and weekend hours back to themselves, certainly much more than they had when they came in. And they're realizing, I do have fulfillment in this job.

00:07:01 Speaker_00
Maybe there are other things that I want to do, and they start to create more fun in their lives, right? Because it's not just all work and then home life. They realize that there can be more.

00:07:12 Speaker_00
This is something that I've seen time and again, and I want to invite you to be a part of it. There is a link in the show notes. If you are interested, click on it, check it out, register today if you're interested.

00:07:22 Speaker_00
All right, my friends, life is too short to be miserable. If your job is feeling unsustainable, Know that I can help. Coaching helps you feel much more in control. And again, when I say that coaching can help you, it doesn't fix you or make you better.

00:07:40 Speaker_00
It helps you realize that you actually are an amazing human and that the system has been asking you to do unrealistic things. And that once you start to gain that sense of confidence, everything seems to fall better into place.

00:07:55 Speaker_00
and you are able to enjoy this beautiful life. All right, my friends, click on the link in the show notes to learn more. And a reminder that you can receive CME via CMFI for listening to this podcast, and that is also in the show notes.

00:08:10 Speaker_00
Okay, my friends, I hope you are well and enjoying these beautiful days of spring. Until next week, peace and love to all of you. Are you ready to take control of your life and put these tools into action? I'm here to help.
