What's up, y'all? So on a recent episode of Questlove Supreme, my co-hosts, Ampey Bill and Sugar Steve and I sat down with the king at rock of the Beastie Boys. We talked about the early days of the Beasties, digging for records around the globe, and how he makes music these days in a cabin in the mountains. Oh, and this jewel.

I was trying to start a band in the 90s called the Nasal Tongues. Me and Q-Tip and MC Milk and B-Real. Listen to Questlove Supreme on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's tip is about how to become a morning person. Make sure there is something you are truly looking forward to when you get up.

It is not hard to get out of bed when the very thought of the day makes you excited. This episode is first airing right before Christmas. If you have young children and you celebrate Christmas, I can assure you that they will pop out of bed bright and early on Christmas morning.
00:01:20 Speaker_00
Perhaps you have a child who routinely turns over and hides under the pillow or whines loudly about getting up for school.
00:01:35 Speaker_00
I can assure you that even this child will be out of bed, possibly before the sun, ready to see what is under the tree. Christmas morning turns people into morning people. Now, obviously not every day can be Christmas. As the song goes, it is the most wonderful time of the year.
00:01:51 Speaker_00
Its rarity helps make it special. But I do think that people who successfully build morning routines figure out a way to make mornings truly exciting and enjoyable.
00:02:01 Speaker_00
Maybe not quite as exciting as Christmas, but pleasurable all the same.
00:02:07 Speaker_00
That is why they are able to stick with their early morning plans.
00:02:17 Speaker_00
So if you would like to build a morning routine in the new year, it might help to think about this. What would make you excited to get out of bed?
00:02:33 Speaker_00
If you are getting up to exercise, make sure it is exercise you enjoy, like a run with a dear friend or a class at the gym with an instructor you love. Lots of people enjoy creative pursuits and feel they don't have time for them in their regular lives.
00:02:46 Speaker_00
Maybe the prospect of an hour with your oil paints or with the characters in a novel you are writing might be just the thing to get you up and moving. People with chaotic lives often love sitting quietly with a cup of coffee and something to read or a journal, savoring these moments when no one is demanding they do anything.
00:03:02 Speaker_00
I don't know what would make the morning exciting for you. But if you are going to stick with a morning routine long term, it is good to make at least some element truly pleasurable.
00:03:15 Speaker_00
What would make you excited if you saw it on your calendar? What would make you think, hey, this is probably going to be a good day? Now obviously that is not the only thing that makes mornings feel doable.
00:03:34 Speaker_00
Even something really fun like coffee with a friend won't feel enticing if you are exhausted. You need to make sure you go to bed on time if you are going to get up early. But as you think about building your morning routine, don't do stuff you hate just because you think you should. You might be able to stick with it for a while, but something will interrupt the routine, and you might use it as an excuse to quit.
00:04:03 Speaker_00
No one quits Christmas morning, though. That we are excited for. So try to figure out some of the same spirit. In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening.
