Hello and welcome to The English We Speak, where we explain phrases used by fluent English speakers so that you can use them as well. I'm Feifei and I'm joined by Beth.
00:00:16 Speaker_00
Hi, Feifei. How are you? I'm very well, thank you, Beth.
00:00:20 Speaker_07
So I saw an interesting expression online the other day.
00:00:24 Speaker_08
It's in my travel era. It's a very creative expression, isn't it?
00:00:37 Speaker_04
I've also seen in my Gothic literature era, in my sporty era, things like that. Beth, what does it mean? Well, people use it to describe the main thing that they are focused on at the moment.
00:00:52 Speaker_04
For example, if you saw In My Travel Era, well, if you're travelling for a few months and upload pictures as you travel, then you might write this caption, I'm in my travel era. It's really common to see it online, but people do say it as well. So, it's a fun and creative way of saying you're really into something in a particular period of life. It could be for a short time or a longer time.
00:01:09 Speaker_02
Are you in any era at the moment, Beth? I don't know.
00:01:15 Speaker_02
Well, I've been reading some books about art recently and I visited some art galleries, so I guess I could say I'm in my art era. Yeah, maybe. What about you, Feifei?
00:01:30 Speaker_04
Last year I was really into knitting, so I could say I was in my knitting era. Very nice. Well, here are some more examples of the expression in my era.
00:01:41 Speaker_02
I recently joined a choir, so I guess you could say I'm in my singing era. Right now, I think I'm in my gardening era. The weekend comes around and I just can't wait to start digging.
00:01:59 Speaker_04
I spent the whole weekend baking cupcakes and pies. I must be in my baking era.
00:02:06 Speaker_02
So this can be quite a jokey expression and it shouldn't be taken too literally.
00:02:15 Speaker_04
You might stay at home and watch films all day in your pyjamas and tell your friends that you are in your lazy era.
00:02:21 Speaker_01
It doesn't mean you're actually spending an era being lazy. No.
00:02:28 Speaker_03
It just means you're really into one particular thing at the moment, almost like giving it a chapter title in the book of your life. That's right.
00:02:39 Speaker_02
So, to recap, we've learnt in my era, which describes what you're focused on at a particular time in your life. And that's all from us. We'll be back next time with another useful English phrase. Bye. Bye. Ever started a new job and had no idea what people were talking about? You're not alone.
00:02:51 Speaker_02
It was probably all business jargon.
00:02:56 Speaker_04
In our new series we talk about the strange words and phrases people use at work that not everyone understands.

Yoga is more than just exercise.
00:03:19 Speaker_01
It's the spiritual practice that millions swear by. And in 2017, Miranda, a university tutor from London, joins a yoga school that promises profound transformation. It felt a really safe and welcoming space.
00:03:36 Speaker_01
After the yoga classes, I felt amazing.
00:03:50 Speaker_06
But soon, that calm, welcoming atmosphere leads to something far darker, a journey that leads to allegations of grooming, trafficking and exploitation across international borders. I don't have my passport, I don't have my phone, I don't have my bank cards, I have nothing. The passport being taken, the being in a house and not feeling like they can leave.

World of Secrets is where untold stories are unveiled and hidden realities are exposed.
00:04:11 Speaker_06
In this new series, we're confronting the dark side of the wellness industry, where the hope of a spiritual breakthrough gives way to disturbing accusations. You just get sucked in so gradually.
00:04:25 Speaker_05
and it's done so skillfully that you don't realise. And it's like this, this secret that's there. I wanted to believe that, you know, that
00:04:36 Speaker_06
whatever they were doing, even if it seemed gross to me, was for some spiritual reason that I couldn't yet understand. Revealing the hidden secrets of a global yoga network. I feel that I have no other choice.
00:04:55 Speaker_05
The only thing I can do is to speak about this and to put my reputation and everything else on the line. I want truth and justice.
00:05:09 Speaker_05
and for other people to not be hurt, for things to be different in the future. To bring it into the light and almost alchemise some of that evil stuff that went on and take back the power.
