You are listening to Episode 182 of the Remind Yourself Podcast. Welcome to the Remind Yourself Podcast, the podcast for physician moms just like you who want to ditch mom guilt, stop yelling, and start enjoying their lives today.

00:00:21 Speaker_00
I'm your host, Rachelle Chestevich, certified life coach, family physician, and mom of four. If you want to overcome overwhelm for once and for all, this is the place for you. Hello Mama Docs and welcome back. Happy September to all of you.

00:00:42 Speaker_00
Huge time of transition for many of us and I just want you to take a moment and give yourself a big round of applause.

00:00:52 Speaker_00
We mamas do so much for our families and our patients and our community and summer is a wonderful time and it's really busy trying to keep all the balls in the air and getting kiddos back to school is a lot of work and I know a lot of it falls on your shoulders.

00:01:09 Speaker_00
I know many of our partners are also amazing and yet a lion's share often falls on your shoulders and I just want to give you a high five and say I hope you find some time for yourself in the next week or two to just take time to sit down and be.

00:01:25 Speaker_00
Okay? That is my prescription for all of you. Background noise here. I've got my windows open and I just couldn't bear to shut the windows.

00:01:32 Speaker_00
So if you hear the cicadas in the background, I just want you to know that it's still summer here and fall is trying to creep in with the cool mornings and I just couldn't bear to shut the windows.

00:01:44 Speaker_00
So if you're hearing that background noise, which I imagine you're probably not even, just take a breath and enjoy the song of summer.

00:01:54 Speaker_00
Okay, today I wanted to talk to you about my group coaching program called StressRx Group Coaching for Physician Women. I just call it StressRx. I feel it is a true prescription that all physicians should have in order to feel well.

00:02:11 Speaker_00
As you've heard if you've followed along with me for many years, I have been a physician for 20 years in family medicine and I chose to have four kiddos in six years starting in my third year of residency and so I know what it's like to balance the struggles of motherhood and medicine.

00:02:27 Speaker_00
And for many, many years, I felt like I was nearly drowning. And coaching is what really helped me. And so backtrack four years, I became a coach, and I love sharing this with all of you.

00:02:37 Speaker_00
And having the opportunity to speak to so many physician women and work with so many physician women over the last four years, I've really narrowed in on what the biggest concerns I hear are. And this is it.

00:02:51 Speaker_00
The overwhelm and the stress are sky high and life is just feeling very overwhelming and not that much fun. Raise your hand if you're along with me. Certainly I know what that's like.

00:03:03 Speaker_00
And so StressRx brings to you an opportunity to reclaim the joy in your life and in medicine again without cutting down your hours or quitting your job. Okay, how do we do this?

00:03:16 Speaker_00
Well, again, it's this really cool program where women from all across the nation, all different specialties come together. We meet once a week on Zoom, Brady Bunch style, and I keep the group small on purpose. I like us to get to know one another.

00:03:32 Speaker_00
I like us to feel safe and comfortable in this environment. And so we come together and I share with you a topic per week, just a 5-10 minute didactic on a particular tool that I think will be helpful.

00:03:42 Speaker_00
And then we coach on all of the issues that are bothering us. Many times it's related to work. You know, my medical assistant doesn't do what I ask and I have to tell her again and again and again.

00:03:52 Speaker_00
And or my patients come with all of the things that they want me to deal with and they think that I should deal with them all. And I hate it when they get disappointed when I tell them I can't help solve all 15 of their problems today.

00:04:04 Speaker_00
For instance, these are just some examples as I'm sure you are following along. But we also know that we have homes and lives outside of work, and that also affects us. So whether you're a mom or not a mom, you're welcome.

00:04:17 Speaker_00
I limit it to physician women just because I like to have that basis of we understand what it's like to be a woman in medicine. And I certainly have women who join the group who are not moms and that's totally fine.

00:04:29 Speaker_00
And yet if you do have kids that can sometimes add another level of complexity. Like oh my goodness I'm stressed out because they need a lot of help with their homework and I'm trying to get my charting done. You know all the things.

00:04:40 Speaker_00
I don't even need to give you examples. You are full aware. So what Does StressRx actually do for a physician woman? Here's what it does. I have three basic tenets that we work on. Number one, we need to figure out how to get work done at work.

00:04:56 Speaker_00
The number one complaint I hear is I don't have any time for me and I'm working a lot outside of my hours and I'm sick and tired of it and I think I need to quit my job. That's, you know, not far reached of an example of women that I speak with.

00:05:10 Speaker_00
And so number one, time management. We figure out proven ways to get work done more efficiently at work, how to delegate, how to set boundaries so that you can actually get your work done during your workday.

00:05:24 Speaker_00
And two, if you have some work that may spill over, you like to take a little bit of time to dig into looking up a particular thing on your day off, that sort of thing. We learn to set boundaries for yourself.

00:05:37 Speaker_00
Instead of saying like, oh, I'm going to catch up or, oh, I'm going to do a little bit of reading on this particular topic on my admin day. and then that time bleeds into all day, right? You know what I'm talking about?

00:05:48 Speaker_00
That computer just sitting on the kitchen counter or the kitchen table all day long that's calling to you. We learn to limit it. Okay, I've got an hour. I'm going to sit here with my cup of coffee.

00:05:57 Speaker_00
I'm going to hammer these things out, and then I'm going to get on to the rest of my day.

00:06:01 Speaker_00
Along with this time management, again, the first thing we do is create more time for you by figuring out how to turn the dial and get more notes done, more charting, more messaging done at work.

00:06:11 Speaker_00
The second thing we do is realize you too are worthy of time. And we start to take that time for you. You know what that does? It makes you feel like a human again.

00:06:22 Speaker_00
Because we're so used to giving, giving, giving at work, at home, and then we think, oh, well, if there's any extra time, then I will do what I want to do. I will remind you, friends, that unless you make the time for you, it's never going to happen.

00:06:38 Speaker_00
Just like I tell my clients again and again and again, and you on the podcast again and again, the to-do list never ends.

00:06:45 Speaker_00
And unless we put ourself on that to-do list, unless we put ourself and what we want to do on our calendar, it's never going to happen. So we work on this together. We share our wins. We share celebrations. We share the progress that we make.

00:06:57 Speaker_00
Now, some people come back and say, you know, after a week or two, oh my gosh, I'm getting all my notes done. Other people are saying, wow, I'm getting half of my notes done, but that is such an improvement. And we continue to make progress.

00:07:08 Speaker_00
We learn to see the progress that we make. And we also deal with and coach on all the guilt and the garbage that comes up when we start to take time for ourself. Oh, I feel so guilty. I feel so selfish.

00:07:19 Speaker_00
All the stuff that we learn as women in our society that, you know, maybe we should put ourselves last. So we learn to rewrite the script and feel good about the fact that when we take care of ourselves, we have more to give to others.

00:07:31 Speaker_00
Now, as an aside, last week I talked about my upcoming masterclass that is free to all who would like to join, How to Get Your Notes Done Faster. This is one of the basic things that we start with.

00:07:42 Speaker_00
But I am inviting all of you listeners, you do not need to join my paid StressRx group. Please sign up on the link in the show notes and come to my free masterclass, How to Get Your Notes Done Faster.

00:07:53 Speaker_00
And you can start to learn these proven tools and put them to work right away. But there's so much more that we do in the group program. So number one, back to time management. We learn to create more time.

00:08:05 Speaker_00
We learn to take time for us and drop the guilt that often goes along with it. Number two, we learn how to deal with stress reduction. Working in medicine is super duper stressful. Burnout is sky high.

00:08:18 Speaker_00
It is not a fault of your character that you're feeling burnt out. It is a system's problem. But currently the systems are still a bit broken. But there are things that you can learn to do on the regular that can help reduce your stress level.

00:08:31 Speaker_00
These are going to be things that you learn that you can do even in the middle of your workday to bring your stress level from an 8 out of 10 back down to a more manageable level so that you can think straight and be efficient and get your work done.

00:08:43 Speaker_00
Because as I know you know, when you are feeling really stressed and overwhelmed and you have that pressure in your chest and that headache and those spinning thoughts whether you're rounding in the hospital or seeing patients in the clinic,

00:08:54 Speaker_00
It's really hard to be efficient when you're feeling like you're drowning. That makes so much sense. So we learn ways to regulate the stress. We also learn ways to set boundaries and stop doing all of the ding dong things that you're doing now.

00:09:09 Speaker_00
I'm not blaming you. You're amazing. People ask you to do more and more. Why? Because you're amazing. But we high achievers get into trouble because we do really well at things.

00:09:20 Speaker_00
We seem to have all these balls in the air and seem to be handling them just fine. So when someone says, oh, by the way, can you do this lecture for the residents? Or, oh, by the way, can you chair this committee?

00:09:30 Speaker_00
Or, oh, by the way, could you squeeze in these extra few patients? Our default reply is typically, yes, I can do that. even though we're crying inside. So we learn how to say no. We learn how to say no and not feel like a narcissistic a-hole.

00:09:46 Speaker_00
And we learn to make time for us on the regular back to number one, right? Creating more time for us. Because when we think we need to do all the things and we feel really guilty, I tell you what, that contributes to burnout.

00:09:58 Speaker_00
Yes, again, I'm not negating the fact that the system is broken, but we allow these things to keep piling on and we think, oh, it has to be this way. We get very much into this. It has to be this way. I have to stay or I have to quit.

00:10:12 Speaker_00
Ask me how I know, because I've been there. But you're going to learn ways to reduce your stress on the regular, whether you're at home or whether you're at work.

00:10:20 Speaker_00
You're going to realize that you have more control than you think and that your default brain, while it's trying to protect you and keep you safe, is actually creating more stress in your life. These are the things we work on together.

00:10:31 Speaker_00
I want you to feel more in control. We're going to learn to banish the burnout, learn how to control stress so you don't feel that you're living in a pinball machine for the rest of your life, OK? Or feel like you're drowning.

00:10:44 Speaker_00
That's how I felt, and that's how many of my clients feel when they come to me. They feel like they're drowning and can hardly keep their head above water. The tools you learn in StressRx are a life jacket. Now you're safe above water.

00:10:56 Speaker_00
Yes, there's still work to do. You got to see patients, you got to deal with life, and now you feel safe above water and you're able to do that.

00:11:04 Speaker_00
The third thing that I really love to help people with in StressRx is help you find this work-life balance that you're looking for. It is like the elusive goal for so many of us, and yet we mostly feel that we're overwhelmed by all the work.

00:11:18 Speaker_00
We're going to learn to right-size that. You're going to learn to get your work done at work and or in a manageable chunk outside of work. And you're also going to learn to create time for you. We're going to start to dream again.

00:11:32 Speaker_00
What is it that I enjoy doing? If I actually had a few hours in the week in the evenings or on the weekends, or God forbid on my days off and my kids are at school, what would I like to do?

00:11:42 Speaker_00
That's the sort of thing that helps create fulfillment and joy in your life. And we do that in StressRx group coaching. This is a program for physician women who are feeling just a little, oh, I'm not sure how much longer I can keep doing this.

00:12:00 Speaker_00
If work is feeling unsustainable and you're thinking, I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this. I don't even really enjoy this anymore. Perhaps I should go look for a job at Barnes and Noble or Starbucks.

00:12:12 Speaker_00
This is the program for you because you're going to come together and number one, it's an amazing group of physician women and we normalize the struggles. That alone is healing to know that you're not the only one. Oh my goodness.

00:12:24 Speaker_00
And then we have a lot of fun together. We learn tools. We go out into the world. We give it a try. We come back. Hey, this is what really worked. This is where I'm still struggling. And then we continue to move forward.

00:12:35 Speaker_00
And by the end of our 12 weeks together, you've got a whole arsenal of tools that you can use on the regular. You're getting your work done in a more manageable chunk of time. And life all of a sudden appears to be a little bit more joyful.
