00:00:21 Speaker_00
I'm your host, Michelle Chestovich, certified life coach, family physician, and mom of four. If you want to overcome overwhelm for once and for all, this is the place for you. Hello, Mama Docs, and welcome back.
00:00:39 Speaker_00
I am so excited to share with you today my enthusiasm and love of the Olympics. And today, I'm going to talk about five lessons learned from the Olympics. So as you all know, and likely are very similarly following the Olympics.
00:00:56 Speaker_00
This is this amazing thing that happens every four years and we come together as a family and we get so excited to cheer on all of the hardworking athletes from around the world. It is such a beautiful
00:01:08 Speaker_00
show of sportsmanship and overcoming trials and tribulations. And anyway, it is just such a beautiful human experience. And there's so many things I love about it. And so I just want to share some of my favorites.
00:01:22 Speaker_00
I'm sure you have your favorites, but I just want to share with you. because it's made really an impact on me. And it made me realize how lucky we are as humans that we have this cool opportunity. And I'm just going to share some of my highlights.
00:01:36 Speaker_00
It is now the first week of August and we have another week of the Olympics to go. Every night after dinner, my family is settling in together and watching the highlights of the day. It is now track and field time. So we're super excited about that.
00:01:49 Speaker_00
Although, again, we've loved the swimming and the gymnastics, all the unique sports out there. So I will get started without further ado. Okay, so lessons from the Olympics 2024. Number one, mental health matters.
00:02:07 Speaker_00
In 2021, Simone Biles dropped out of the Olympics because she was having the case of the twisties where she was really in her head and she was disoriented and didn't know kind of where she was in space and it was very dangerous.
00:02:20 Speaker_00
And she said that for her safety, she needed to drop out and really work on that. She is a beautiful example of taking time for you if you're having a very difficult time. She speaks to this clearly.
00:02:34 Speaker_00
I started following her on Instagram and she had several posts, mental health matters, so. You've heard it from me, and now you're hearing it from the most amazing gymnast in the world, Mental Health Matters.
00:02:49 Speaker_00
And in fact, you probably are aware if you've been following, she met with her therapist the morning she won gold in the all-around. She is in Paris, competing at the highest level, and she took time to take care of her brain.
00:03:04 Speaker_00
I just love that she is such a beautiful representation of this. And yes, there will be people that don't like it that you take time off to take care of you. I don't care. This is your one precious life.
00:03:16 Speaker_00
And if you need to take time off to take care of you, if you need time during the week to see your therapist on the regular, please do that. It is vital. I've loved Simone all along. She is amazing human being.
00:03:32 Speaker_00
But years back when she dropped out, there were haters. I don't give a crap about that. People who are sitting on the couch who aren't in the arena doing the work. I don't care what they have to say. Take care of you people. Mental health matters.
00:03:46 Speaker_00
Number two, on a similar note, how you speak to yourself matters. I love reading the lips of these athletes before they run, jump, vault, so on and so forth. I see them saying to themselves, you've got this. You can do this. Take a deep breath.
00:04:06 Speaker_00
Yes, you can. Those are just a few of the words that I've seen mouthed to themselves before they leap, swim, so on and so forth.
00:04:15 Speaker_00
And I'm sure there are many other cool things because your mindset dictates how you feel, which then makes your actions easier or harder. I've talked about this many times before. I get it. We're not Olympic athletes.
00:04:30 Speaker_00
Well, there are some physician Olympic athletes. I believe the fencer who got a medal is in medical school, and there was another fencer, I believe, from another nation who won a medal who is a physician. At any rate, I digress.
00:04:44 Speaker_00
When we go to work, it may not be to win an Olympic gold, but you're making a difference in people's lives. But how you speak to yourself matters. What you say to yourself matters.
00:04:56 Speaker_00
If you go to work saying, I don't think this really matters, it's going to affect how you feel and how you act, which again, I get it when we're burnt out, that depersonalization starts to happen.
00:05:05 Speaker_00
But what if you just remind yourself, I'm helping somebody today? That little shift in your mindset can make a big difference. When we make a mistake, It really matters how we speak to ourself.
00:05:20 Speaker_00
If we berate ourself and are self-critical, that affects us. It affects how we show up. It affects how we feel throughout the day.
00:05:29 Speaker_00
If these Olympic athletes fall off the beam, trip on a hurdle, and start to beat themselves up, do you think they're gonna be able to get back out there and do it to the top of their ability next time? No. You can have a moment.
00:05:42 Speaker_00
Again, this is self-compassion. Wow, I made a mistake. This is part of being human. What do I need right now? That's how I love to teach you to speak to yourself with self-compassion.
00:05:53 Speaker_00
Then you can really put yourself out there and maybe you don't make it and you become embarrassed. You're disappointed, whatever it is, you can handle it. How you speak to yourself matters. These Olympic athletes are such a beautiful example of that.
00:06:08 Speaker_00
Thirdly, coaching is vital. I've talked to you before about how coaching is an evidence-based solution for burnout in physicians. Imagine Olympic athletes without a coach.
00:06:21 Speaker_00
They need someone who can see objectively what is going on, who can remind you that mindset matters. When you have a difficult time, they can say, yeah, this is really disappointing. These are the obstacles. These are the things that come up.
00:06:35 Speaker_00
OK, now how are we going to move forward? They don't let you stay stuck in the muck. Now, again, this is not toxic positivity, like, oh, well, you flub that up. You're going to be fine. No. Yeah, that's disappointing. Let's take some time and be with that.
00:06:49 Speaker_00
But now let's not dwell on it because if we continue to think about what went wrong, it's not going to help us moving forward. Coaches help see the broader picture.
00:07:00 Speaker_00
Most importantly, I think coaches have a belief in you before you believe it in yourself. Any physician that I work with, if they come to me, for example, with a lot of backlog and are working many, many hours at night, I know
00:07:13 Speaker_00
that they can change things and turn the dial and not be working so much in the evenings and weekends. I 100% believe that in my heart. I know it's possible.
00:07:23 Speaker_00
Yes, I've seen a lot of proof and helping a lot of people, but I also just know the capacity of the physicians that I work with are outstanding. They're astounding. But a lot of times we don't believe it for ourselves.
00:07:36 Speaker_00
We don't believe that it's possible. So a coach holds this possibility and belief in you before you have seen evidence. So I think that's kind of cool. So I just think that that's amazing.
00:07:47 Speaker_00
I also love that they are there to cheer you on and be with you in disappointment. So the good and the bad, they are there. Thirdly, or excuse me, that was third. Fourth, being authentic Everybody loves it. And I'm gonna bring up an example of Snoop.
00:08:07 Speaker_00
Snoop Dogg is a rapper from days of old. And when he started becoming what I would call now this like unofficial mascot of the United States team, I was like, well, this is sort of peculiar.
00:08:18 Speaker_00
You know, when I was watching the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon for the track and field, like he ran a 200 meters in not a bad time, like 34 seconds for like a mid fifties dude, not bad.
00:08:32 Speaker_00
And who's probably not been much of an athlete in his life, but at any rate. I was like, well, this is interesting. And then to see him out on the stage, but here's what I will tell you. His enthusiasm and his true joy in it all is just contagious.
00:08:45 Speaker_00
I mean, I see him in the swimming pool with Michael Phelps. I see him with Martha Stewart talking to the horses. And you can tell he's like a little bit scared to approach the horses, but he's just real.
00:08:55 Speaker_00
And again, whether you like him or not, I don't care. It doesn't matter. When you show up authentically as your true self, That is contagious. And I just want to share with you, be who you are. Be yourself. Some people are going to love it.
00:09:12 Speaker_00
A lot of people are going to love it. Some people, maybe not so much. And that is okay. Now, of course, as humans, we want everybody to love us. As physician women, we particularly want to make everybody happy and make everybody love us. I get it.
00:09:25 Speaker_00
I want everyone to love me too. And yet I'm not everybody's cup of tea. I'm a juicy peach, and not everybody loves a juicy peach. But be authentic. I love that. Snoop Dogg is an example of that. I think that's so cool. And again, his joy is infectious.
00:09:41 Speaker_00
So be that person in your community, in your clinic, in your hospital, okay? Lessons from Snoop. Who knew that that was actually gonna happen ever in my life? And number five.
00:09:55 Speaker_00
Humanity is amazing, and we can share the joy of the highs and the lows with one another. We can uplift women around us.
00:10:07 Speaker_00
During the floor event in gymnastics, Simone Biles came in second, Childs came in third, and the woman, Rebecca Andrea, I think, Rebecca from Brazil. I may be misremembering, but I'm quite sure it's Brazil. At any rate, she won gold.
00:10:24 Speaker_00
She was a phenomenal athlete. And when they were up on the podium, The US team bowed down and gave accolades to their competitor. They acknowledged that she was an amazing athlete, a hard worker, and that she deserved that gold medal.
00:10:42 Speaker_00
Let's lift one another up. as women. Let's lift one another up as humans. I'm not going to get into the whole political sphere, but there's a lot of contention in our nation right now. Let's remember the humanity in one another.
00:10:55 Speaker_00
Let's lift one another up and acknowledge the good that others do. It doesn't take away from you to shine the light on others. In fact, it just amplifies the joy. When we can have joy in other people's success, that brings us joy as well.
00:11:13 Speaker_00
So I hope you are enjoying the Olympics as much as my family. If you are training for something, use this energy to move you forward. And if you're interested in finding out whether coaching is right for you, I'm here for you.
