I'm your host, Michelle Chestovich, certified life coach, family physician, and mom of four. If you want to overcome overwhelm for once and for all, this is the place for you. Hello, Mama Docs, and welcome back.

00:00:39 Speaker_00
Today, I am talking about my favorite topic. I may say that time and again, but truly, this is my favorite topic, gratitude.

00:00:48 Speaker_00
I believe every year on this week of Thanksgiving over the last four years, I have touched on the topic of gratitude on this week.

00:00:55 Speaker_00
And I think it's very fitting because, of course, during the time of Thanksgiving and coming together with family, the whole point is to stop, be together, and to give thanks.

00:01:04 Speaker_00
I, however, think it's really, really awesome when you can incorporate gratitude more regularly into your life.

00:01:11 Speaker_00
Now, this is not some Pollyanna sunshine, everything is great, but it's the first mindset work that I ever did years ago, before I even understood what coaching was, before I understood that mindset matters, all of that.

00:01:24 Speaker_00
It was probably about 10 years ago. I was feeling very stressed and overwhelmed, and I thought to myself, what if I started my day by jotting down a few things that I'm grateful for? And here's what I'll tell you that I found to be true.

00:01:36 Speaker_00
The more I did it, the more I saw in my life to be grateful for. Yes, I was still charting a lot at night. Yes, I had four little kids and it was often a gong show in my house. Yes, I was getting injured while I was running. And yet, I had a warm home.

00:01:53 Speaker_00
I had a loving husband. I had fresh water to drink after I came back from a run. And day after day, by doing this practice, I started to see all of the abundance around me. So this is not a scientific study.

00:02:06 Speaker_00
This was my own personal experience that I'm sharing with you that I believe I've shared the past four years. but I want you to try it in your own life. If you're a bit skeptical, just need to give it a try. You're the scientist.

00:02:20 Speaker_00
Try it for 30 days and see how's my attitude, how's my outlook on life if I take two minutes every day to jot down a few things I'm grateful for and why. Check in after 30 days. Check in after 60 days. Check in after 90 days.

00:02:37 Speaker_00
I would love to hear how it goes for you. I don't think it takes that long. And what a perfect time to start this practice. And in fact, you can share it with your family.

00:02:48 Speaker_00
Or maybe just as a family, when you're having dinner together, you go around the table, not just on Thanksgiving and say what you're grateful for, but what if every day you did that? Or what if once a week?

00:03:00 Speaker_00
I don't know what's going to be right for you and your family. All I know is that gratitude makes a big difference. There is a lot of abundance in your life. And I'm very sure that there are a lot of struggles and pain as well.

00:03:13 Speaker_00
This is our human experience on earth. And my mission is to make it somewhat simpler for you. Not pain-free, because that is impossible, but I would love for you to have more joy, more gratitude, more love, more peace in your life.

00:03:27 Speaker_00
And this is such a simple thing that you can do that makes a difference.

00:03:31 Speaker_00
Last year, I believe, I shared on the science of gratitude, and I didn't go back and review all the details, but I seem to recall that they did a study with people who had heart disease, and they did this after 30 days.

00:03:46 Speaker_00
One group was documenting gratitude every day, and the other just had normal routine cares. And the study that did the gratitude practice had improved heart rate variability. That is significant.

00:04:01 Speaker_00
and they were just having less depression, more joy, and were doing better in their recovery. That's fascinating. Simple things that we can do with our mind affect our body.

00:04:12 Speaker_00
You get to decide how you want to put this into practice, but if you've not done it or you've done it in the past and you've fallen off, no problem at all.

00:04:19 Speaker_00
But this is just my yearly encouragement to you to put it into practice again, and I think you'll notice a big difference. And if you've done this and or you take me up on my challenge and do the experiment, Email me, let me know how it goes for you.

00:04:32 Speaker_00
What do you notice in 30 days? What do you notice in 60 days?

00:04:35 Speaker_00
The final thing that I'd love to say to you today is I would love for you, after you listen to this, the next time you're in front of the mirror, maybe it's when you're brushing your teeth this evening, is I want you to look in the mirror and say thank you to yourself.

00:04:48 Speaker_00
We're good at offering thanks and gratitude to others and other things in our life, but I'd love you to spend a few minutes saying thank you to yourself.

00:04:57 Speaker_00
If that feels weird and awkward to do in the mirror, what might even be cooler, and I'm actually going to do this as I'm saying it out loud, write yourself a thank you note.

00:05:07 Speaker_00
Dear Michelle, this is what I want you to know, and thank yourself for what you've done, how hard you've worked over the years, how you are listening to a podcast to try to feel better in your life, how you take such great care of your family and your patients, how you get up early some days so you can walk on that treadmill for 20 minutes.

00:05:28 Speaker_00
Whatever it is, I would love you to list several things that you are thankful for yourself for. We don't often do this, and this is kind of my little twist this year, is to not only get into a gratitude practice, but to thank yourself.

00:05:44 Speaker_00
And maybe, and this is something that I've not done before, but as I'm saying it out loud, I'm going to try as well, is that every day on my gratitude note section, because while I do love journaling, I do my gratitude in my note section on my phone, I'm going to in there every day say something I'm grateful to me for, and I encourage you to do the same.

00:06:04 Speaker_00
I also just want to end today expressing my love and gratitude to all of you, my listeners. You help me so much to sit down and do this work.

00:06:16 Speaker_00
It is my mission on earth to help ease the suffering, to make life as a physician a bit easier, and knowing that you tune in and listen

00:06:25 Speaker_00
and that at times it gives you a little bit of a boost, at times it helps you have that boundary with a patient, help you get your notes done faster, help you reduce stress throughout the day, whatever it is that you've been able to take away from this podcast.

00:06:39 Speaker_00
I am so grateful that you tune in. I'm grateful that you share it with others who you think would benefit, and I'm grateful for those of you who have taken a moment to rate and review. I also really love it when sometimes I hear from you.

00:06:53 Speaker_00
Sometimes you send me an email just saying, hey, this really touched me. It makes my heart swell. And while I don't need any of that, because I know that you're listening and I love sending out these tips and things of support for all of you.

00:07:07 Speaker_00
It is fun to hear from my listeners as well. And sometimes I even meet you at conferences. I've met listeners on the plane, various things like that. And it just, it really is fun to meet people in real life that are, that are tuning in weekly.

00:07:21 Speaker_00
So thank you for listening and sharing this with others who will also benefit. So my gratitude to all of you and for all the amazing work that you do for your family. for your patience, for your colleagues and your community.

00:07:38 Speaker_00
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. When we start to take care of ourselves and feel a little bit better, we are the ripple effect and we become the change that we need to see in medicine.

00:07:51 Speaker_00
So thank you for being you and may you have a most wonderful week. Until next week, peace and love to all of you. Are you ready to take control of your life and put these tools into action? I'm here to help.
