You are listening to Episode 187 of the Remind Yourself Podcast. Welcome to the Remind Yourself Podcast, the podcast for physician moms just like you who want to ditch mom guilt, stop yelling, and start enjoying their lives today.
00:00:21 Speaker_00
I'm your host, Rachelle Chestevich, certified life coach, family physician, and mom of four. If you want to overcome overwhelm for once and for all, this is the place for you. Hello, Mama Docs, and welcome back. Happy October to all of you.
00:00:42 Speaker_00
I am just back from a most amazing conference, the Brave Enough Conference, that's put on by Dr. Sasha Shilkut in Phoenix, Arizona. And there were amazing speakers, and I just feel so invigorated.
00:00:56 Speaker_00
But even more than that, I love surrounding myself with other physician women and remembering why I do this work. It's not too hard for me to remember why I am coaching, because I've struggled tremendously.
00:01:10 Speaker_00
You've heard my family's tragic story, and I see the benefits in my clients. And I just, this is what I'm called to do is help heal the healer.
00:01:21 Speaker_00
But to be in a room with 200 women who are sharing their stories of struggles, as well as their stories of triumph and thriving by doing some simple things to make life better for them.
00:01:33 Speaker_00
It just fills my heart and gets me super excited to come on here weekly and share with all of you. It's also super fun because some of my clients who I've previously worked with were in this room, as well as some new clients that I just met.
00:01:50 Speaker_00
And I just love meeting amazing physicians, all different specialties from all over the nation, hearing wonderful speakers and then relaxing and chatting in the pool in the shade. in the afternoon.
00:02:02 Speaker_00
If you've never been, I highly recommend you go check out Brave Enough because it is indeed true that inside all of us, no matter how overwhelmed and scared you are, it just takes a little bit of courage and bravery to make some changes that will greatly impact your life.
00:02:18 Speaker_00
Okay, today I am excited to share with you my fall winter book series. I've done this in the past and it has been very popular and so I am bringing it back to all of you.
00:02:31 Speaker_00
And there are going to be some books that you've heard before, as well as a new book that I'm excited to share. And the reasons that I keep going back to some of these books is that the information is vital, and I know not everybody knows them.
00:02:45 Speaker_00
So if you are new to me, if you are new to the Virtual Book Club, I'm so excited to have you. What I do is I choose four books.
00:02:53 Speaker_00
And about every other month, I invite you to a virtual book club where I share with you the top pearls, the top takeaways from the book. If you want to read the book, I highly recommend it or listen to it on Audible.
00:03:07 Speaker_00
And yet, if you don't have the time or don't want to take the time to do that, it's totally awesome for you just to show up and gain the information.
00:03:17 Speaker_00
I love to joke that we were not the people in high school and college to use the cliff notes of the readings that we needed to do.
00:03:24 Speaker_00
And yet it is perfectly acceptable for you to come and for me just to share the pearls with you because the books are that vital. Okay. So I, if I had a drum roll, I would do that, but I will just name to you the books.
00:03:37 Speaker_00
And then I want you to know that you can click on the link in the show notes and sign up for my virtual book club. Now, if you're already on my email list, you don't need to do this. You will be receiving an email with all of the information.
00:03:49 Speaker_00
If you want to sign up again, you certainly can, but you will be receiving the information if you already receive emails from me. But if you're new to listening and are Interested? Please come join us. It is open to all and it is free.
00:04:04 Speaker_00
Okay, so the books that we're going to be discussing this fall and winter start with number one, Burnout, The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle. This is a phenomenal book by the Nagoski sisters.
00:04:16 Speaker_00
And it delves into why so many of us are feeling stressed and burnt out and overwhelmed. And hint, it has nothing to do with you not being strong enough.
00:04:27 Speaker_00
And it gives very simple strategies on how to complete the stress cycle that I think is vital for every physician and probably every human to learn.
00:04:36 Speaker_00
Because when we have unrelenting stress, it not only feels horrible, but it's very dangerous to our body. So I will be sharing those with you at the book club, and this one will be later in the month.
00:04:47 Speaker_00
Again, the details will be coming to you via email when you sign up on the link in the show notes. Okay, so that is book number one. It is the New York Times bestseller. It is phenomenal. I will go back to that one over and over again.
00:05:00 Speaker_00
The second book that we're going to discuss, and we've discussed in the past, but it's so phenomenal and so important, we're doing it again. And this is the book by the woman who I was just talking about.
00:05:10 Speaker_00
Dr. Sasha Shilkut wrote this book called Brave Boundaries, Strategies to Say No, Stand Strong, and Take Control of Your Time.
00:05:20 Speaker_00
This is one of the number one things I see with physician women that we're so overwhelmed and we struggle and we have a very hard time saying no. Brave boundaries are vital.
00:05:30 Speaker_00
So again, highly recommend you get the book, read it, and if not, come and get some key takeaways that you will be able to apply to your life. Right? This is huge, everybody. It's the key to making changes in your life.
00:05:44 Speaker_00
So sign up for the book club and you can join our virtual discussion. A new book that we're going to be discussing this year that I'm super excited about, I read most of it sitting poolside in the shade in Phoenix, is called Fair Play.
00:05:59 Speaker_00
It is another New York Times bestseller and the author is Eve Radosky. It's called Fair Play, a game-changing solution for when you have too much to do and more life to live.
00:06:11 Speaker_00
This, my friends, is a beautiful way to have a discussion with your partner about how things in the home get done. I work with women week after week, and I'm so grateful. Oftentimes, it comes up that we feel that everything is up to us.
00:06:27 Speaker_00
The mental load, the activity planning, the appointments, the gift buying, all of these things, vacation planning.
00:06:35 Speaker_00
Week after week, this comes up in coaching and I can certainly give strategies that can help people feel better and feel more in control. And yet this book is game changing, right? Well, that's what it says. It's a game changing solution.
00:06:49 Speaker_00
This book talks about how to start to have a discussion with your partner about all of the things that need to be done and how to divvy it up and why we've been stuck in this feeling overwhelmed and feeling like we need to do it all as women.
00:07:03 Speaker_00
I always say that our generation of women was told, you can do everything. You can be a surgeon, you can be an astronaut, whatever it is that you want to do, go ahead and do it.
00:07:12 Speaker_00
And though many of us also got the message, and we should also be taking care of the home like Mrs. Cleaver.
00:07:17 Speaker_00
And while things have changed and our partners have taken on much, much more than in past generations, we still often feel that the lion's share falls on us. And in fact, the statistics show that, that even in dual working households,
00:07:32 Speaker_00
that the women is spending, I believe it's like six to eight hours per week extra doing household tasks. So this book is going to be amazing.
00:07:42 Speaker_00
If it is a source of contention for you and your partner about how things get done or you're feeling very resentful, feeling like a martyr, oh my goodness, you need to come join this book club. This will be probably in early winter.
00:07:55 Speaker_00
and it's gonna be phenomenal. So again, click on the link in the show notes so you can come and show up for this book called Fair Play.
00:08:03 Speaker_00
I believe there are also cards, like an actual game, but we are just gonna be talking about the book, but you may want to just get all the things if you find it helpful. So awesome.
00:08:13 Speaker_00
The final book on this series is again, one that I've done before, but I believe is truly the key to the universe on how we live our lives as women, and it is called Self-Compassion.
00:08:25 Speaker_00
The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Dr. Kristen Neff, PhD.
00:08:30 Speaker_00
And this book delves into how we, as high-achieving women, are very compassionate to others, but we've been very self-critical for the most part in our lives, and how this, in fact, holds us back and makes life much more challenging than it needs to be.
00:08:47 Speaker_00
When we go for a goal and we don't achieve it, we often berate ourself. And so we either hold back and we don't go for the goal and or we go through life being very, very self-critical of ourself and it makes just life that much harder.
00:09:02 Speaker_00
So I talk about the simple strategies of how to bring self-compassion into your life. I call it Self-Compassion 101. I give you a three-step strategy on how to incorporate this into your life, and it just makes life so much easier.
00:09:18 Speaker_00
smoother, not easier, because life is still hard. And yet, when hard things happen, and then we layer on shame and blame and self-criticism, you can see how that could be heavier.
00:09:29 Speaker_00
This is a strategy to be able to get through these very difficult times. Self-Compassion 101 is what I will be sharing with you at that book club gathering. Okay, my friends, I am super excited. These books are phenomenal.
00:09:44 Speaker_00
Most of them I've read several times. And again, I invite you to buy the book, borrow it from your library, get it on Audible. If you're not familiar with the Libby app, check it out, L-I-B-B-Y.
00:09:57 Speaker_00
It's where you can get either eBooks and or Audible type books from your libraries. It's phenomenal. Please do this and sign up. Click on the link in the show notes. You will get an email about the times and the dates of these virtual book clubs.
00:10:14 Speaker_00
This is a way to come together as community. It's super fun. We share stories. We share insights. and I will send you with pearls that you can take away. So even if you don't read the book, please show up.
00:10:28 Speaker_00
