Author: AI & Data Today
Duration: 00:09:18
Episode Shownotes
Back in 2018, when at the time we thought AI hype couldn’t get any more hype-y, we at Cognilytica spent time thinking about what the broad implications of AI would be on our individual lives, our business and work lives, and on society in general. This thinking led us to
put together our four-part vision we called the “AI-Enabled Vision of the Future”. Continue reading Cognilytica’s AI-Enabled Vision of the Future – UPDATED [AI Today Podcast] at Cognilytica.

Hello and welcome to the AI Today podcast. I'm your host, Kathleen Walsh.
00:00:26 Speaker_01
I'm your host, Ron Schmelzer. Many of you have been tuning into our AI Today podcast for so many of the different things that we talk about here on AI Today, from our glossary series, which has been very popular.
00:00:39 Speaker_01
Haven't done that one in a little while. Maybe we'll do that again sometime soon. Our use case series, which we've done for a while, looked at different AI in different industries, our generative AI series, our trustworthy AI series.
00:00:50 Speaker_01
We just sort of wrapped up our most recent prompt engineering series. Of course, we're always doing interviews with folks who are implementing AI and talking about best practices because that's our jam.
00:01:01 Speaker_01
But, you know, sometimes people really like listening to our most popular podcasts, I should say, are the ones where we look at the future. One of our most popular ones is where we looked at the year ahead. We did some predictions.
00:01:13 Speaker_01
But a long time ago, we really looked at like, well, let's what if we can look like even farther and farther ahead and say, well, where is all this heading?
00:01:20 Speaker_01
So, you know, we can spend a little more time talking about then sharing with you kind of our perceptions and our thoughts as to where we see a lot of this heading.
00:01:29 Speaker_02
Exactly, because, you know, I mean, we are AI today. So we'd like to focus on what's happening today with artificial intelligence and how it's impacting the way that we work and live in society in general.
00:01:40 Speaker_02
But if we're looking forward, how does that impact? How does AI impact? the future. So we want to spend time on today's podcast going over Cognolitica's AI-enabled vision of the future.
00:01:53 Speaker_02
And over the next number of episodes as well, because this is a series, as Ron mentioned, we will be diving deeper into each of the four parts of our AI-enabled vision of the future.
00:02:04 Speaker_02
So if you haven't done so already, subscribe to AI Today so you get notified of that. But today we wanted to just give an overview in case you haven't read our AI-enabled vision of the future or heard us talk about it before.
00:02:14 Speaker_02
And now we are reimagining what that future looks like, especially as things like generative AI have come into the picture, which wasn't there when we were talking about it back in 2018, when we first started to envision what an AI-enabled future looks like.
00:02:32 Speaker_01
So before we sort of dive into each one of these areas, we'll talk about why, why are we even, why do we even think about this?
00:02:37 Speaker_01
And I think the reason why we started thinking about this, this is back in 2018, by the way, when we started really creating this version of the future.
00:02:45 Speaker_01
And we're going to go and talk about over the next few episodes, how this vision maybe has stayed the same for the future. Maybe how the future is already here.
00:02:53 Speaker_01
in some ways, and maybe how some of that vision may have been modified in ways that we didn't expect in 2018.
00:03:00 Speaker_01
But the reason why we're doing this is because people need to understand when they're buying and implementing AI technology that it changes the way people work. It changes the way people live. It changes the way people interact. And some of these ways
00:03:14 Speaker_01
are really easy to see now.
00:03:16 Speaker_01
But some of these ways, especially if you haven't thought about it much, like we do, we think about these things all the time, and you have conversations with people who are working in various industries, you have people at different levels, too.
00:03:27 Speaker_01
People who are just entering the workforce, or not even in the workforce, they're kids, you know, they're students, right? Or people who are late in their career, leaving the workforce.
00:03:37 Speaker_01
or people who are dealing with AI from a legal regulatory perspective, or dealing with AI from a human creativity perspective, you start seeing all of these different inputs, if you will, into what's pushing the AI future, and then you realize that things are kind of heading in a specific way, and it's a matter of time, really, when things happen, not a matter of if.
00:04:00 Speaker_01
So, I just want to frame that.
00:04:02 Speaker_01
That's kind of like why we're thinking about this, because you can either just kind of let AI happen to you and deal with it as it comes, or you could really think more deeply about each of these things, how it will most definitely impact your personal life in one way or the other and your work life, absolutely.
00:04:20 Speaker_01
So, that's why we kind of frame things out, why we divided things up in different ways, because we see AI impacting different parts. of your life, basically.
00:04:31 Speaker_02
Right. And that's exactly what Ron said. We see AI impacting different parts of your life and impacting it maybe in different ways.
00:04:38 Speaker_02
And so that's why we really want to spend some time today with a high-level overview of the four parts that encompass our AI-enabled vision of the future. But then in subsequent podcasts in the series, we'll really dig into each different part.
00:04:54 Speaker_02
So the four major components that we said of our AI-enabled vision of the future include the first component is the AI-enhanced organization.
00:05:03 Speaker_02
So in this component of the vision of the future, we need to address core questions like, what does the future look like when AI is a core component of almost every business process, every task, every operation, and every single activity?
00:05:20 Speaker_02
We talk about other technologies and other transformative technologies and other transformative ways, one of which you could say was mobile, maybe the Internet.
00:05:28 Speaker_02
How did that impact the way that we work and the, you know, organization, but also maybe, you know, social media, for example. And yes, organizations can get on board.
00:05:37 Speaker_02
But if you choose personally to not have social media accounts, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Twitter, whatever it is, that's OK. You can still function in society.
00:05:49 Speaker_02
Yes, maybe you don't get updated on as quickly as others, or maybe it's a little harder to connect with people. But in general, not having that social media presence doesn't really hurt you from a business or a personal perspective.
00:06:08 Speaker_02
But what's it going to look like in the future when AI is a core component of just about everything? You can't opt out of that. So that's what we're going to be talking about.
00:06:19 Speaker_02
Also, what does the future look like when organizations not only leverage AI to provide value, but then depend on AI to stay competitive in rapidly changing markets? And if they offload some work and activities to AI systems,
00:06:35 Speaker_02
What does that look like? It's not so easy to just suddenly bring it back and have a human do it. Ron and I were at a conference a year ago or so at this point, and they were talking about digital transformation. So it was a little bit different topic.
00:06:48 Speaker_02
And they were saying, well, you know, we can just go back to the old way of doing things, paper and process, or, you know, paper, pen and paper, if we, you know, our systems are down. And then they were like, wait, but hold on a minute.
00:06:59 Speaker_02
Actually, that's not the old way of doing things. That's the new way of doing things for an entire generation that's never done it the old way before.
00:07:07 Speaker_02
You can't just suddenly be like, oh, let's go back to, yeah, the old way that they've never done before. So we have to think about that, right? What happens if, you know, an entire generation has not done that?
00:07:18 Speaker_02
That is not going back to the old way of doing things. And how do you suddenly go back to those, you know, human process? So that's what we have to be thinking about.
00:07:26 Speaker_02
And then also what is the future of work look like for people in the job market when AI is enhancing the entire organization?
00:07:37 Speaker_01
Yeah. And so that's like a whole chunk. We're going to dedicate a whole episode just to that. We'll talk about that. People are definitely thinking about it now.
00:07:44 Speaker_01
And it's interesting because the future of work topic has been coming up a lot recently for, of course, employers who are thinking about how they grow and manage their workforces.
00:07:54 Speaker_01
And of course, for employees and for people coming out of school, even think about like, what is it going to what does that workforce look for me? It's going to be a really
00:08:01 Speaker_02
Younger generations, right? You know, like that are in elementary school. What do they need to learn now to actually be a valuable employee 10, 20 years from now?
00:08:10 Speaker_01
This is really kind of, you know, transformative in many, many ways. So yeah, it'll be a hot topic, I think, for conversation.
00:08:17 Speaker_02
Ron might need to make a AI-enabled song about this.
00:08:20 Speaker_01
I might, I just might. And, you know, honestly, we do want, as we sort of continue along these four components here, this is interactive. We want to hear from you, too.
00:08:26 Speaker_01
You know, as we discuss these, email them, as we post them on various places, comment. Let us know your thoughts. Let us know if you agree with us or disagree with us. Hey, these are our opinions. This is kind of our perspective based on what we see.
00:08:38 Speaker_01
But other people see things from other perspectives. And, you know, maybe we might have missed something. Maybe we might be wrong. Maybe things are actually already here. in some ways are in the future. So that's part of this whole conversation.
00:08:51 Speaker_01
The second sort of core thing, so that's sort of like AI as it impacts the workplace, right? The business and people's organizations.
00:09:00 Speaker_01
Another sort of way that AI may impact you in your daily life is sort of this idea of everything is going to be augmented with AI or
00:09:09 Speaker_01
Autonomous originally when we did this story and this idea back in twenty eighteen we were thinking that everything was gonna become autonomous you know.
00:09:16 Speaker_01
Self running bots doing everything right i think sort of we slightly modified that perspective and say well maybe a lot of things will be autonomous but certainly everything that can be augmented. Absolutely will.
00:09:29 Speaker_01
I think that we can see even now that things are just putting AI into things that make sense, and in some ways, things that don't make sense.
00:09:36 Speaker_01
So in this component, in this idea of everything is becoming augmented, the idea is that we really want to focus on, well, what does it mean when all the tools we use, all the consumer appliances we use, all the things that we do have some little bit of AI in it?
00:09:56 Speaker_01
whether it's helpful or whether it's not whether you know every website we interact with is a is a if there's even websites in the future you know i have a i components every mobile app is a enabled everything right so what does it mean when a augments everything were interacting with
00:10:12 Speaker_01
It has made whatever can be made augmented is made augmented. Whatever can be made autonomous is made autonomous. As many things as interaction as possible. What does it mean for our daily lives? What does it mean for society?
00:10:25 Speaker_01
When everything is basically like a self-ordered checkout kiosk at every store, and there's nobody to talk to, and everything has gone self-running and self-automated. There's pluses and minuses to that, but we see, again, that as an inevitability.
00:10:44 Speaker_01
It's a matter of time. Whether it's very soon or very far from now, we see that's another aspect of this AI-enabled vision of the future.
00:10:53 Speaker_02
And another aspect is enhancing the human experience. So in this component, we really think about what it looks like in a future where we're using AI in all aspects of our daily human experience.
00:11:08 Speaker_02
And then we need to start thinking about, well, what does human creativity look like in the future?
00:11:14 Speaker_02
Back in 2018, when we first thought about our AI-enabled vision, we did not have large language models and we did not have tools that were so easy to generate art and help humans generate art. We also didn't really have AI-enabled
00:11:32 Speaker_02
tools like Canva, for example, where you're able, you know, yes, it helped you kind of drag and drop with graphic design, but now it can do even more. So now we need to think about, you know, really, what does that human experience look like?
00:11:48 Speaker_02
You know, we had talked about, could we go anywhere and be able to talk to anybody in any language with the help of AI? Yes, that looks very possible nowadays. You know, it was it was looking possible back in 2018, but it's even more now.
00:12:02 Speaker_02
And so we need to say, OK, well, what does this human experience look like? How does using AI in our everyday lives, how is that going to impact relationships? How is that going to impact society?
00:12:14 Speaker_02
How is that going to impact the way that we learn how to engage and interact with each other? Does that mean that we now really can go anywhere and talk to anybody about anything at any time? Language is no longer a barrier.
00:12:28 Speaker_02
you know, directions really are no longer a barrier, all of this stuff. And how is it going to impact communication too?
00:12:35 Speaker_02
I mean, you know, we had that topic, we talked about soft skills when it comes to generative AI and how those are really important, you know, creativity, critical thinking, communication was one of those soft skills. But what does that mean?
00:12:46 Speaker_02
Now, are we going to be focusing more on liberal arts and are we going to, you know, really kind of have to teach that from all ages in school, even, you know, continual learning for adults.
00:12:59 Speaker_02
How is this going to impact the way that, you know, we have this human experience?
00:13:05 Speaker_01
One of the things we had talked about in the past, especially when you're looking at that other core aspect of augmented and autonomous everything, we're like, well, in a world where, for example, all the cars were autonomous, would you even need a garage?
00:13:19 Speaker_01
Right. You know, for example, like, does the house look different? Does the city look different? Well, the same sort of thing may apply to human experience.
00:13:26 Speaker_01
In the world where everybody's using AI for everything, including learning and including communication interaction, does that mean, now that we've all had the experience of working from home and remote, which is, by the way, when we first did this topic in 2018, that was actually not part of the universal experience, the remote work from home.
00:13:50 Speaker_01
virtual experience, which is now part of everybody's experience.
00:13:53 Speaker_01
When you combine all these things together, especially as you're seeing things out there right now, you know, a lot of turmoil in the real world, you're thinking like, do colleges need campuses anymore? You know, does the idea of the downtown change?
00:14:06 Speaker_01
I've already seen all these articles about how they're converting skyscrapers now to residential. properties to solve sort of two problems at the same time.
00:14:14 Speaker_01
One, high rate of vacancy in offices, and two, the high rate of unemployment, of homelessness and people who can't afford homes and things like that. So anyway, so this is kind of interesting how all this will impact.
00:14:27 Speaker_01
So this last little bit is sort of a different idea, which is that when AI is everywhere, and when AI is used for everything, and when the data is out there, what does this mean in terms of the knowledge that is out there about everything doing anything at all times, right?
00:14:44 Speaker_01
This idea of what's called pervasive knowledge. And so in this sort of component of the vision, we look at the future where What does it look like when we've collected so much data, when we've basically built a limitless number of models?
00:14:57 Speaker_01
And you can already see this. It's like somebody comes up with a model, like a couple of weeks later, a month later, someone comes up with another model, right? So like nothing stops people from building on top of each other.
00:15:08 Speaker_01
You can build custom models, which means that people will. If someone wants to build a very custom model about you in your own bag, somebody will have a model just about you, right? What does this mean?
00:15:19 Speaker_01
What does it mean when we've implemented this AI and knowledge and all the data and the models are starting to share?
00:15:24 Speaker_01
So now, let's just say in the future you go to a website and it already knows exactly who you are, it knows exactly all your preferences because these companies are sharing models with each other, right? What does that look like?
00:15:36 Speaker_01
Does that mean everything will be hyper-personalized? That's a good, positive vision of the future. But does that mean we have lost all of privacy? Or should we just give up on the idea of privacy now?
00:15:49 Speaker_01
Is this idea we should assume that there's pervasive surveillance, that there's nowhere to hide, right? That means, how will this impact the way governments and organizations deliver services and benefits?
00:16:02 Speaker_01
How will that impact just the general cohesiveness of society? These are all, I think, pretty profound questions, you know? And I think that's what we're digging into because the technology is here now. The capabilities are here now.
00:16:13 Speaker_01
We're not talking about flying cars, and we won't. We're not talking about edge technologies which aren't really very widely adopted.
00:16:21 Speaker_01
We're talking about things that are here and now that are becoming easier and easier and easier every day to use, to implement, to embed. It's going from the hands of folks who have been technical to the hands of folks who are not technical.
00:16:35 Speaker_01
You have to understand there are two sides of that coin. On the one hand, people who are not technical now can make full use of AI capabilities, but that also means
00:16:45 Speaker_01
People who are not technical can make full use of AI capabilities, including people who may not have the best intentions or may not have the best knowledge, right? So this is sort of our vision of the future.
00:16:57 Speaker_01
We're going to talk this through and explore these ideas in part because this is going to be our future, will be today at some point. And of course, we here focus on AI today.
00:17:09 Speaker_02
Exactly. And so we'll be discussing this in our newsletter as well. So if you haven't done so subscribe to our newsletter, you can find it on LinkedIn. I'll also add it into the show notes and reach out to us.
