Hi from CNN, this is Madeline Thompson with 5 Things You Need To Know for Monday, December 16th. Details continue to emerge about the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin today.

00:00:14 Speaker_01
Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes spoke at a press conference this afternoon.

00:00:19 Speaker_05
Two other people have died that died were a teacher and a teenage student. Six other people were injured. Two students are now in critical condition in the hospital, and these injuries are considered life-threatening injuries.

00:00:35 Speaker_05
Four students are also at other area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Many of you have asked me about the why of this. Why did this happen? What do we know? What was the motivation? I do not know.

00:00:53 Speaker_01
A law enforcement official tells CNN the teenage suspect was female. Another law enforcement source said the suspected shooter used a 9mm pistol. Today's shooting marks at least the 83rd school shooting of 2024, according to a CNN tally.

00:01:08 Speaker_01
This year has now surpassed 2023 for the most school shootings in a single year since CNN began tracking such shootings in 2008.

00:01:17 Speaker_01
Russia has started withdrawing a large amount of military equipment and troops from Syria following the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. That's according to two U.S. officials and a Western official familiar with the intelligence.

00:01:32 Speaker_01
The sources say U.S. and Western intelligence suggests Russian officials have been trying to determine whether HTS, that's the main rebel group now in charge of Syria, is open to a deal that would allow Russia to stay in some of Syria's key bases.

00:01:46 Speaker_01
It comes as Syria's new rulers are meeting with foreign dignitaries, including from the U.S. and U.K., in their push for international legitimacy, which so far is seeing some success. Meanwhile, the Pentagon said U.S.

00:01:58 Speaker_01
troops killed 12 members of ISIS in central Syria today in efforts to prevent the group from taking advantage of the instability there. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a confidence vote today, triggering snap elections next year.

00:02:13 Speaker_01
Just last month, the country's governing coalition collapsed in a budget dispute. CNN's Sebastian Schuchla has a look at how the election in February might play out.

00:02:22 Speaker_03
The CDU, the conservative party here in Germany, are way ahead. And the SPD, the Social Democrats, are lagging in third, sometimes potentially even falling far back as fourth.

00:02:33 Speaker_03
And that has left open the door to what will be a seismic change in German politics, which would be that the AfD, the far-right populist party here, could come in second place.

00:02:43 Speaker_03
And so we will wait to see now, but it is clear that Germany will have a more conservative chancellor and government come February.

00:02:52 Speaker_01
At first it was Meta, now Amazon has jumped on the bandwagon and plans to donate to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

00:02:59 Speaker_01
The company confirmed to CNN that it'll give a million dollars in cash to the event and make a $1 million in kind donation by streaming it on Amazon Video.

00:03:08 Speaker_01
Its founder Jeff Bezos is expected to visit Trump in person in the coming days as he and other tech giants seek closer relationships with the incoming administration.

00:03:18 Speaker_01
The two spoke over the summer after the first assassination attempt, and Bezos publicly praised the president-elect at that time. But Trump had previously criticized Bezos over his ownership of The Washington Post and the newspaper's coverage of him.

00:03:32 Speaker_01
Coming up, are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

00:03:37 Speaker_02
I'm CNN tech reporter Claire Duffy. This week on the podcast Terms of Service, CNN business economics writer Elizabeth Buchwald. She's going to walk us through what we might want to consider buying now before prices go up under a Trump White House.

00:03:51 Speaker_00
Once he gets in the Oval Office, he can put tariffs into place. E-bikes are actually made in China.

00:04:09 Speaker_01
Sorry, snow lovers, the forecast for Christmas next week is looking warm and dry for much of the U.S. Early predictions indicate temperatures could max out around 10 to 15 degrees above normal for much of the country.

00:04:22 Speaker_01
It's an unwelcome reminder of last Christmas, which came amid the warmest winter on record in the U.S. CNN's Chad Myers has more.

00:04:30 Speaker_04
That's right, Madeline. Especially in the week leading up to Christmas, most of the eastern half of the US will be well above normal.

00:04:36 Speaker_04
There are even indications on some of the computer models that places like Kansas City may approach 60 degrees that week, so completely out of the question for snow there.

00:04:46 Speaker_04
Now there will be some cool down weather across parts of the Northeast and New England before that, but there's just not enough moisture to make any snow, so we're not going to see the real risk of any big snowstorm there, and there's no low pressure involved at all.

00:05:00 Speaker_04
It does look like a very warm Christmas, at least certainly the days before Christmas, leading all the way up even to the days after.

00:05:08 Speaker_01
That's a wrap. We'll be back tomorrow at 6 a.m. Eastern.

00:05:16 Speaker_04
Welcome to Times Square. Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen are back together to ring in the New Year.

00:05:21 Speaker_05

00:05:22 Speaker_04
And anything could happen.

00:05:24 Speaker_05
Oh my gosh! So embarrassing! That's perfect TV!
