Hey there, from CNN, I'm Krista Bowe with the five things you need to know for Monday, December 16th. President-elect Donald Trump announced today that SoftBank Group plans to invest $100 billion in U.S.

00:00:13 Speaker_05
projects over the next four years, aiming to create 100,000 jobs.

00:00:18 Speaker_06
This historic investment is a monumental demonstration of confidence in America's future.

00:00:23 Speaker_05
A source tells CNN the investment from the Japanese technology holding company will focus on artificial intelligence and AI infrastructure, including energy, data centers and chips.

00:00:34 Speaker_05
Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, some of Trump's picks for his cabinet, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, will continue their efforts to lobby support from lawmakers this week. Trump selected RFK Jr.

00:00:45 Speaker_05
to run the Health and Human Services Department and Gabbard to be his spy chief. One of the nation's most critical Air Force bases in Ohio was forced to close its airspace for hours.

00:00:58 Speaker_05
An international airport in the New York area shut down for an hour Friday night.

00:01:02 Speaker_05
This all happened this weekend because of claimed drone activity, after multiple drones were reportedly spotted in residential neighborhoods in at least eight states since November 18th.

00:01:13 Speaker_05
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday he asked DHS to deploy special drone detection equipment to affected areas. And the FBI and DHS say there's no evidence that the drones pose a national security or public safety threat.

00:01:26 Speaker_05
But residents and local officials are demanding more action and answers. Connecticut is one of the states that's reported drone activity.

00:01:34 Speaker_05
Its Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal told CNN this morning the federal government's response so far has been concerning.

00:01:40 Speaker_00
If there is classified data here, it ought to be released to reassure the public. But my fear is that the federal government knows little or nothing about most of these sightings.

00:01:55 Speaker_05
In what appears to be his first public comment since rebels took control of Syria, ousted President Bashar al-Assad said he didn't plan to flee.

00:02:03 Speaker_05
A statement was posted on the Syrian presidency telegram account, saying he stayed in the capital Damascus until the early hours of Sunday, December 8th. But it's not actually clear if Assad still has control of that account.

00:02:15 Speaker_05
CNN's Fred Pleitgen is in Moscow, where Assad is thought to be staying, and says the Post claims he moved to a Russian base before he left Syria.

00:02:24 Speaker_01
He then says that the Russian base itself became under attack and that it was then the Russians who made the decision to conduct an emergency evacuation of Bashar al-Assad and some of his closest confidants and members of his family to Moscow, that it was not his decision.

00:02:38 Speaker_01
The Russians, of course, had said that it was actually Bashar al-Assad himself who had decided to cede power. Another interesting quote that he put out as well, he said, at no point during these events did I consider stepping down or seeking refuge.

00:02:52 Speaker_01
nor was such a proposal made by any individual parties.

00:02:57 Speaker_05
ABC News will pay out $15 million as part of a defamation settlement with President-elect Trump.

00:03:03 Speaker_05
Trump sued the network and its anchor George Stephanopoulos, after he said 10 times on air erroneously that a jury found Trump was liable for the rape of journalist E. Jean Carroll.

00:03:14 Speaker_05
In fact, the jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse in a civil suit. We asked CNN's Caitlin Polans for more details.

00:03:21 Speaker_04
Krista, ABC News is ending this lawsuit by paying. They're going to give Trump $15 million toward a presidential foundation and museum charity, a million dollars towards his attorney's fees.

00:03:32 Speaker_04
They're also going to put an editor's note at the bottom of the story about this interview Stephanopoulos did in March with Representative Nancy Mace, saying that these statements, they regret.

00:03:43 Speaker_04
In court, they say this was all to remove the distraction of litigation. That's why we have the settlement. But there were depositions coming this week for both Trump and Stephanopoulos that will now be avoided.

00:03:54 Speaker_05
A new report highlights the huge wealth gap between renters and homeowners. What's next?

00:04:02 Speaker_02
I'm CNN tech reporter Claire Duffy. This week on the podcast Terms of Service, CNN business economics writer Elizabeth Buchwald, she's going to walk us through what we might want to consider buying now before prices go up under a Trump White House.

00:04:16 Speaker_03
Once he gets in the Oval Office, he can put tariffs into place. E-bikes are actually made in China.

00:04:23 Speaker_02
Really anything that just isn't produced in the U.S. Follow CNN's Terms of Service wherever you get your podcasts.

00:04:34 Speaker_05
The typical U.S. homeowner has almost 40 times as much wealth as a regular renter. That's according to a recent report from the Aspen Institute that says the median homeowner's net worth is $400,000, while the median renter's is just $10,400.

00:04:51 Speaker_05
It also found that at every income bracket, renters, who make up over a third of U.S. households, have less positive cash flow, more debt burden, and fewer savings than homeowners. And renters are also more likely to hold student loan debt.

00:05:06 Speaker_05
All right, that's all for now. I'm Chris DeBow, and our next episode drops at 3 p.m. Eastern. Till next time.
